I had the same problem, fixed though thanks to the link from amaphiyarden :-) happy girl here!

I wouldn't recommend the device to others though. I bought it because it was relatively 'cheap' as a backup for shoots & holiday. On my other computer it often didn't work because the computer didn't recognize the device 9 out of 10 times. Though now, on my new computer, it works perfectly.. if only I didn't came across this new problem...

Not exactly what I expected when I bought it...

Negitive... I had the same problem.  I had to borrow my friends PC to Format!  But guess what!  1 Year Later and with SmartDisk out of business I was able to go back and copy the software!  Sweet! Feel free to use it from my site: http://yardenreport.blogspot.com/

Have 40 gig photobank smartdisk, trying to download memory sticks, loaded with photos. but as i attempt on my macbook.......a download site called 'bounceback' pops up. can you tell me what i should do ?

For "bounceback", see: http://www.cmsproducts.com/products/backup_software/bounceback/bounceback_mac.html

BounceBack is software to simplify the process of making backup copies of your files.

Click "Cancel", and then use whatever software & methods of your choice, e.g., "drag-and-drop", to copy your files from your internal disk-drive to the external storage.

Hi i have a smartdisk crossfire external harddrive which I have used to save my photos from a windows based pc. However I have now purchased a IMac and wish to be able to load my photos on to this. When I...

congratulations on switching to mac!plug the external hard drive back into the PC, and copy the photo's to the PC, now plug it into your mac and go to applications-utilities-disc utility, the external drive should be listed on the left, click on the erase tab, at the volume format select "ms-dos file system", then click the erase button, this will erase everything on the drive and set it up so your mac can use it (but its ok because you moved all your pictures to the PC) now you can go back to the PC and copy the pictures on the external drive and it will work with your mac.

A friend formated my Photobank PB40 and now It will not recieve the photos when I try to download them, what can I do

You cannot reformat using Windows or your card reader will not longer work. You need to use the Fat32 formatting tool. It's still available on the Verbatim website (They bought SmartDisk)
http://www.verbatim.com/support/support.cfm?open=Downloads
Select-Hardware Storage-Portable Drives. You should see a heading on the right for Downloads. Select the Verbatim Fat32 download tool. Download the tool. Connect your PhotoBank to your computer with the mini-USB cable and then run the Fat32 tool you just downloaded. Follow the prompts to reformat the PhotoBank. Your card reader and hard drive will be good as new.

SmartDisk turns on, has a blue light but shows no icons. I was in the process of copying from my camera. I turned on the SmartDisk, it showed a file icon and the HDD icon. I pressed copy and it...

I had the same problem but it felt like the drive was working. I took a chance, inserterd a 4GB CF card, and pressed the copy button. I hoped it would shut off after the copy was made due to the 30 second inactiviy timeout. After about 10 minutes, the blue backlight to turned off and it powered down. I plugged the Photobank into a laptop via USB cable and checked the original CF card files against the Photobank files. Success! All files were copied!

My SmartDisk 80 gb FireLite hard drive says it is full but it is empty. What could be the reason for this and how would I format it? I use a Macbook pro. I dont want to have to buy a new external...

You will receive an error message when copying a file larger than 4GB to the hard drive if the drive is formatted FAT32. The FAT32 file system has a file size limitation of 4GB. You may also receive an error when backing up to the hard drive using backup software. To correct this problem you will need to format the drive to NTFS. If you are using Windows ME or 98SE, you will not be able to use NTFS.
There are some products that do not support the NTFS files system or changing their file system. If you own a FlashTrax/FlashTrax XT/FotoChute/PhotoBank/USB FireLite XPress, you cannot change the format of the drive to NTFS. It must be kept as FAT32 in order to operate properly. If you are using SOHO NAS via ethernet, do not format it to NTFS. If you have any questions, please contact technical support before you format the drive.

Warning: Formatting a hard drive erases all data from the drive. Please backup any data prior to formatting the hard drive.
To format to NTFS, open My Computer.
1.Right-click on the Verbatim hard drive, left-click on Format.
2.Select NTFS as the File System.
3.Place a check in Quick Format.
4.Click Start.
Once the format completes, you will be able to copy files larger than 4GB to the hard drive.

Lossing firmware.because i format.digitalphotobank model PB#40 smartdisk

The Photobank must be formatted in FAT32 to work. If you formatted in any other format, go to http://sdkbase.smartdisk.com/display/2n/index.asp?c=cpc=e72ylkXWR8u0YnrbMviY&cpc=&cid=1&r=0.8182337

You will see a file on the right hand side... It is a short program that will reformat the drive in FAT32. Just follow the directions on the page

Hope this works for you/

SmartDisk Digital Photo Bank Model#PB40

No, the problem isn't solved. I paid the $19.95 for your "premium assistance" which consisted of telling me about the SmartDisk warranty and advising me to contact the company. As my "problem" points out, "been there, done that." No response from the company. Your technician just went to the company's web site and read it to me. I had already done that, too. If your "technician" could have advised me about how to fix the device, or even how to get the company to respond, he would have been worth the $19.95. He couldn't and didn't. Needless to say, I'm still p1ssed off and $19.95 poorer.
