Turn the camcorder on and press the ‘Disc Navigation’ button. A list of thumbnail previews of photos and/or movie scenes will appear Select the scene using the joystick control on the DVD-Camcorder and then press the joystick or ‘Play’ button.

Where is the SCN mode on a canon rebel xsi

There are some scene modes available in the Basic Zone. Simply turn the mode dial on the top of the camera to the desired mode.
Full details are in the "Basic Shooting and Image Playback" section of the manual (beginning on page 43 in my copy). If you need a copy of the manual, you may download one here.

I record and save a scene and it plays back. But if I switch off the device and switch it back on after an hour, the isn't there anymore!!

From page 10 of your user manual:

A scene is a static lighting state. Scenes are stored in the temporary memory, until they are transferred to one of the playback faders. You may create a single scene or a succession of up to 999 steps per Scene.

Make sure you transfer the scene to a playback fader, otherwise the scene is only stored in temporary memory and will be lost when power is turned off.

Cannot link scenes together

there is no way you can link scenes together on your hdd handycam. one possible solution to this issue is to burn or write movies onto a dvd using the supplied software, then all movies you burned would have seemless playback.

Camcorder "Freezes Up" during playback and/or during creation of thumbnails

I had the same problem - you are (as I was) turning off the camera too soon after you hit the stop button after recording a scene. Wait until the word "disc access" appears (about 5 seconds after you hit the stop button. This "marks" the end of the scene. I just don't know how to edit that scene out or if it will delete it out. I know after finalizing the disc that scene will pause for a while (10 to 20 seconds even) when you watch it through the DVD player to the TV.

Why can't I access Shooting Menus?

The Shooting Menus allow the user to control many aspects of the operation of the digital camera. You can change image size and compression, exposure compensation, sharpening, etc. When using a "Scene Mode" (Fireworks, Museum, Beach/Snow, etc)the camera determines the best settings for the particular scene and the options are limited in the Shooting Menus. If the Shooting Menu contains fewer options than expected or you are unable to adjust a particular setting be sure that the camera is not set in a scene mode. Depending on the camera model you should use "A" or "M" mode for full control.
