If you're using windows 98, put in the CD then in the C:\ prompt type FDISK then you can partition your hard drive to the capacity that you want. Then format it by typing in the C:\ prompt ex. format c: then press ENTER. If you are using Windows Xp then put in the CD and let it boot from there. It will ask you what you want on how to partition your hard drive and formatting it.

Tip

Unaccessible harddrive, or password protection on

If you cant format or access a harddrive due to encryption, corruption, password or other reason,
WARNING! THIS WILL ERASE ALL FILES ON YOUR DRIVE!
The last effort can be to try to boot up your computer in DOS-mode,
with a software that totally wipes/overwrites the disks sectors.
The harddrive must be direct connected to the motherboard,
not by anykind off usb-cord or any usb-port.
using a freeware program called "KILLDISK".You can find the software if you go to WWW.GOOGLE.COM and search for KILLDISK.
it totally wipes your harddrives sectors, eliminating all corruptions.
It can also be used for erasing confidential information from drives.

Diskboot failure insert system disk

What was the problem in the first place? Why are you trying to restore the computer?

Or reading wrong; do you mean the computer will not start? Boot?

Primer:
Disk Boot. -> The bootstrap files on the harddrive.
Bootstrap <- Make it easier to understand?

The basic Windows files.

Can't access restoration on the harddrive with F11? Quite common.
I mean, how crazy is that? Let's put the restoration files, (Basic Windows files), on the harddrive? So if the harddrive goes bad?????

Suggest you use the Restoration Disk.

{Pre-built computer manufacturers were packing the Restoration Disk/s with the computer. As time went by the manufacturers saw the users were not using the disk/s, or loosing them.

Didn't want to use, because of fearing computer damage if they error, or didn't even want to try.

Okay. Put the restoration files on the harddrive, then.
Have the new owner make a BACKUP, when the owner turns the computer on for the first time.
Save a few cents without providing the disk for each computer.
(Take a few cents times 50,000 computers, or more)

Hardly anyone makes a backup disk, when the computer is turned on for the first time. If the harddrive goes bad you cannot access the restoration files.

Computer manufacturers have gone back to packing the restoration disk, with the computer }

What?
Don't have the Restoration Disk? (I won't say anything about not making a backup disk. Could be failure time with it, also)

Go to the back of the computer tower, or up on the side. Write down the Serial Number. It's in the white Service Tag. S/N = Serial Number
(NO, do not post it on the internet. Only to an authorized HP representative)

Call HP Support.
In the USA call 1-800-474-6836
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Restoration Disk is free. The shipping and handling is not.
$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship. $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.

For other countries use HP Worldwide Support,

http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/support.html

Do I think the Restoration Disk will repair the problem?
Dunno. Don't know what the original problem was. You haven't stated it yet.

Post back in a Comment.

Iwant to formet my pc compaq sr5160il how can i?

Get a program called FDisk, that is on a bootable floppy. (search 'bootable floppy' and 'fdisk' on Google) Insert this floppy into your floppy drive and turn on the computer. At the command bar, invoke Fdisk. When it runs, select delete primary partician. Then quit Fdisk and invoke Format. Your hard disk will then format.

You do fully understand everything on your drive will be then gone - correct?

Iam working on a compaq pc desktop had windows xp with pen4 iam trying to install a old harddrive i had in a pc that had windows 98 how do i clear all the old thing,s out of the harddrive so i can install...

ok ...the issue is only that it might recognize the operating (win98) system if its installed on it ..if it was just a slave there will be no problems..just attach it ..on the bus and power ...and boot the system ...if you want you may use a partition magic program to format and rename it ...but you can do that with the xp ...by clicking right on the drive in my computer and format from there ... if it doesn't want to format it ..just boot from the installation cd ( xp) and continue like a normal installation until you are at the point where you have to choose the partition to install the program ...choose the new added hard disk and format it ...by deleting and reformat ....but after this just stop the installation and restart the old OS ...but I'm sure that you will be able to format it quick from xp directly ...so , just attach it and boot...click my computer to see if it sees it ..and format

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll is corrupt or missing

See if you can get into safe mode. If you can't then your system files are corrupted and you'll have to restore your computer back to factory defaults.

I believe on your compaq presario they have a built in factory restore and its either accessed by the F10 or F11 key when you first turn on the computer. You'll know when you first turn on the computer at the compaq logo screen.

Let me know if I can help you further.

HP a810n will not boot up

On most HP's and Compaq's you can restore the machine by pressing F11 when you see the HP/Compaq screen when you first turn the machine on.
There is a hidden recovery partition on your harddrive and your machine will be restored to the condition it was in when you bought it, the only problem with that is it will delete any personal files you have on the machine like photo's and music.
If you want I can talk you through recovering your personal files before attempting the restore, it will involve removing your harddrive from your computer and linking it to another computer.

I am having problems trying to get full amount out of my harddrive.

I would use a "secure wipe" - there are free downloads for ths on the internet - not comfortable recommending one over the other as I am just a nutral tech.

Using a secure wipe will also delete any and all partitions on the drive, then when you are ready, format the whole drive in NTFS format. Then it will be ready to use in its full gigabits.
