Hi,

Initially, I suspect that actually it is still a single hard drive but has been partitioned into two, the C being the working drive and the D or E as the data drive. Depending on the space availability, eveytime a new game is to be installed, you can instruct the installer to install/use on this D: (or E:) drive instead of the regular C:\.. Windows and the the game program will know where it was installed/saved and run from there without any other intervention from the user.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

MY DATA (D:) IS NEARLY FULL

Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. Repeat Defrag for the D drive.

C drive is almost full, but there is no way i have 144GB of data on this drive. i cannot find where all this space is being used,

Have you emptied your recycle bin lately? How big is your swap file? Have you defragmented the hard drive lately? All of these things eat hard drive space. System restore pojnts take up space. Every security update installed is cached in a hidden directory. If you hoard your email, your pst file can get huge.

Need to reset acer aspire 1200 desktop

The Aspire One is a netbook produced by Acer; it does not come equipped with a CD ROM drive, so a traditional hard drive reformat and Windows reinstallation is not possible without a peripheral storage device. An external USB CD or flash drive will suffice, however.Difficulty:Moderate

Instructions

    • 1 Plug in the external CD drive, then turn on your netbook and let it boot to your operating system.
    • 2 Open your web browser and go to the BootDisk website (see link in Resources). Download the Windows XP Fresh Install Bootable CD, then burn these files to a blank CD via your external CD drive.
    • 3 Ensure the files have burned to your bootable CD, then restart the netbook with the CD still in the drive.
    • 4 The netbook should boot to the CD upon the restart. Follow the instructions prompted for installation. Upon completion you will have a clean installation of Windows XP on your Acer Aspire One.

When i turn on my laptop a warning notice comes on screen immediately saying smart failure predicted on hard disc 0:ST9160310AS-(PM). Warning immediately back up your data and replace your hard disc drive....

It means exactly what the message says.
The hard drive is going to fail in the near future. I recommend you back up your data before the hard drive fails completely.
When the hard drive fails, replace the hard drive, and use your Compaq recovery disk to install Windows and the device drivers plus your programs to get the laptop working again.

This Acer Aspire 5920 was given to me as a gift from a family member, there are many things installed on this system. Basically, i guess i want to go through the add/remove programs to see which i need and...

You could try google each item, it will tell you what it is.
Just do not remove system drivers / dislay and audio drivers.
You can remove most acer software, acer is one of the worst for installing un needed rubbish.
If you are not too short on space, it may be wise to leave well alone till you learn a little more about what you use.
You could also do a factory reset if you have the disc, or you may have the files needed on the hard drive. Check in start / programs / accessories / system tools, look for recovery options

Slow system, hard disk problem?

First off, get any important data off NOW. If it took 48 hours for disk check to run AND it found bad clusters your hard drive is on it's way out. Consider yourself lucky that you are getting an early warning sign. Normally computers get slow for the following reasons.
1) Infected with malware/viruses. Run free programs available from (CNET) www.download.com. These include MalwareBytes, SPybot Search and Destroy, Adaware.
2) Computer hard drive is full or seriously fragmented. Try removing unneeded programs (especially pictures) and then attempt a defragmentation.
3) Hard disk failing or getting old. Sometimes this is due to environment. Smoky, dirty or dusty environments will eventually contribute to build up of heat inside the computer and excessive heat kills computers. Also hard drives are mechanical and they do wear out over time. Laptop drives take more abuse because they are moved around more than desktops. If they start getting noisy then it is time to prepare to replace it. If you haven't done it yet GET YOUR IMPORTANT DATA OFF NOW!!!!
4) Overclocked or over heated processors. Dust buildup in the cooling fans and heat sinks can cause the temperature to rise and when processors get heated up they slow down and evenyually crash.
5) Running out of memory. As our computers get older we keep adding programs and eventually (if we dont upgrade the memory) the computer runs out of memory.
So if I were in your shoes I would do the following:
1) make sure you have any important files copied off of that hard drive. You never know when it may crash so get them off now.
2) run some of the malware removal programs I suggested (if your hard drive has the available space for them) and also run your anti-virus program.
3) Remove unneeded files from the hard drive and then run the disk defragmentation tool. I once had a customer that had jammed her hard drive full of pictures and when it crashed it had no room to rebuild itself.
4) if all that does not improve the speed then see about getting an upgrade for the memory.

Acer problems

The alt f10 key combination they were referring to is a system restore and must be pressed during the boot process.  This will erase the hard drive and install everything as it came from the factory.

Have an Acer Aspire Gemstone Laptop 5920 The mouse touchpad has frozen - how can I get it to work?

You can try to boot your laptopwith a live Linux CD (e.g. Knoppix CD). This OS can bypass windows installation on the hard drive.See if you can use the touchpad. If the problem is still the same, then your problem is not related to your windows software. It could be a hardware problem.
