You can recover data from portable hard drive with data recovery software.Tenorshare data recovery is one of the bests. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage,bad section, virus attack etc.Download it and scan your external hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data,you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.

It sounds like your hard drive is probably corrupted. It is always difficult to restore the contained data back from a corrupted drive with a great of bad sectors.
But, if you insist, you also can take chances with an external hard drive data recovery freeware that always can do a great job to restore the inaccessible data off from a hard drive:

Next time, you should always remember to back up all important data on different drives, no matter what happens.

You will need to recover the data using something like this data recovery program.
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

I've had to use it many times in the past but in this case you need to plug that drive into another system as an external drive or slave drive and run the software from there. It will rebuild the drive and hopefully recover the files.
Good luck.

Either you have 50 gigs of stuff on there or your hard drive space is not being properly read. U might need to reformat the drive if necessary.
Meanwhile your xbox electronics may have a limit on the size of space - so if the drive has 200 gigs of space on it and your unit will only recognize 32 gigs, then that is all it sees and can use. Capiche?

There is no way to fix a bad sector. A bad sector is like a scratch on a cd that can't be fixed. You should run a program like "HD Tune", when you use a program what it does is it will read the disk and when it can't read a certain spot it marks it as a bad sector. After that the hard drive will move the data from the bad sector to a spare area of the hard drive. The spare area will store the data from a bad sector and will be usable like the old one. However if you get too many bad sectors you will run out of spares. When that happens your drive will crash.

You Can Try These Steps: Windows comes with a built-in hard disk utility software that scans your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.
  1. On My Computer, select the disk drive that you want to diagnose and repair.
  2. Right click on it and select Properties
  3. Go to Tools tab.
  4. Click on the "Check Now" button under "Error Checking Status".
  5. Depending up on your choice, choose either "Automatically fix file system errors" or "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors."
  6. Then click on Start.

My passport 500gb external just stopped working. It froze up so I removed it and plugged it back in. When I plugged it back into my computer it starts spinning but then makes a click sound and stops.

The clicking sound is caused by the spindle inside the hardrive, because it was not removed properly. Just connect you external hardrive to your computer, if it makes the clicking sound again dont remove it yet, just restart your computer properly. In that way all the devices connected to the computer will be refreshed and properly shut down. If it is not detected still, unplug the haardrive then try another USB port. Recommended ports are at the back of the CPU if your using a desktop. These USB ports have higher voltage output that can power up all external hardrives properly.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My external 500gb maxtor drive is reporting as 50gb and none of the data is there?

the logic board thats inside the external casing may have gone bad usually due to overheating, even tho the entire device stays somewhat cool, that chip is transferring 150mt/s, you can try opening the device if your not worried about the warranty and hooking the drive up internally instead
