The bundled Rechargeable Li-ion battery (BLM-1) is recommended.

Is it necessary to put any specific type of batteries?

Yes, on Kodak cameras, for instance, they recommend LiIon batteries which have a higher voltage.
Some camera brands work off of regular alkaline batteries, though.

What kind of camera do you have?

Why does the battery run down so fast????

CRV3 Lithium.

These type of batteries run out quickly, because they are basically just 2x AA Rechargable tapped together. Cameras using these kind or just AA batteries run out quickly and don't last so long. Its always on and running as long as the connectors are touching (Positive and Negative) conductors.

Resolution:
Take out the batteries when not in use
If you have the budget, buy a new camera; stay away from these type of battery cameras
-Price ranges from 100USD-1,000+USD

Good luck, and rate my response.

My finepix s1000fd will not hold battery charge. Cleaned the battery connects. New duracel batteries are discharged in an hour of being in camera on off. I tried new rechargable batteries and they will not...

Try using a different type of battery (not meaning *brand). Many newer digital cameras will only operate properly with high alkaline batteries vs other types. I was having the same problem with my Sony cyber-shot and found out that I had been using the wrong KIND of batteries all along. Hope this post was helpful to you.

At first i put alkaline batteries in coolpix l100 and when its assumed the camera show battery exhausted and i change batteries with ni-mh kind and turn on camera but the message battery exhausted display...

Did you go in and change the battery type in the camera from alkaline to Ni-MH? This fixed the problem for me. It is on page 111 in the manuel (or menu button to setup menu to battery type).

Brand new D60: This battery cannot be used.

yep ...look in the menu ...of the camera ..and select the type of battery u are using ..there are 2 kinds of batteries ...one of them are alkaline ...and the other I'm not sure ..probably nickel or lithium ..or something like that ...anyway there are choices there ..and you just have to try 'am one by one ...
it will also accept only high quality non chargeable ones ...so ..even if they work in other device ..in this kinda cameras it will see 'em as empty if they arent great in quality and amperage ...

What type of battery are you using? Do you have the right battery setting?

The camera's battery setting is set to "Coolpix" as the default (the original batteries it came with). If you're using regular alkalines, be sure to change this setting in the camera (Menu > set up > battery type > alkaline).

When the batteries ran out for the first time, I bought cheap dollar store batteries, and when I put them in my camera, it shut off immediately when I tried to turn it on, despite them being brand new. I found out this was because the batteries didn't have enough juice to power my camera. I replaced them with Duracell, and it worked fine after that (Panasonic, another dollar store battery works okay too).

Hope that helps.
