Hey ! you could ways shove the HDD in an old microwave =D
@Pivert Dubuisson
You don't actually need an OS to wipe any HDD, but I see you're logic maybe if you wanted to say you do, to make things easier with a GUI ? If so though, why wouldn't you point to a lightweight linix distribution like a mini linux distribution.
Granted I love the tip you're trying to show but 'erniewilleat' clearly stated this "Looking for a way to do it without going into windows/linux"
Personally I think "Vision's" response is fine, I'd probably just recommend a few more tools to the arsenal though. like;
Active Kill Disk : Also a nice tool, Doc for floppy boot or CD can be found HERE
Darik's Boot And Nuke: Awesome tool ! ( already stated )
Disk Wipe: Another option
Also there's utility's made by Fujitsu like the IDE Low Level Format and HDD Diagnostic Tools that you can download from there website. This is also the case for many other top branded HDD creators.
To anyone else though, I'd stick with "visions" post or check out an alternative I posted above. ( How we love options ! )
- No, you need an operating system (such as Linux) to interface with your IDE interface on the disk.
- You need :
- An USB to IDE adapter to you do not need to open a computer to insert it in : http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B001OORMVQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1310226408&sr=8-2
- A Linux live cd such as Kubuntu,
- Open a console (konsole), change to root user : sudo -i
- ensure which drive is plugged (/dev/hdX , with X=a, b, or c depending of the number of hard drive.
- Issue an fdisk /dev/hda if you want to display the model of the a drive. To the same for other drives, to ensure you find the good drive.
- When you are sure you have the right drive letter, just erase it :
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hdc (if hdc is the drive to erase)
- If you really want to make sure no one can recover the data, repeat the dd command 3 times.
If you are unsure, disconnect any other drive in your computer to make sure you do not loose any data.
An other solution is to take a drill machine, and make a big hole (10mm) through the disk, making sure that you also break all the plates. But then the disk is dead.
