Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

JVM1460 surface light problem

I was changing one of the surface light bulbs on the microwave and the bulb broke off at the base. When I tried to switch on the other surface light, there was a pop and the circuit breaker tripped.
I have since replaced both surface light bulbs, but I can not get the lights to turn on. The microwave works fine otherwise.
Is there a fuse for the surface lights?

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You could try the potato trick. Take a small to medium potato. Cut off an end of the potato. Press the cut end into the broken lightbulb and unscrew the rest of the bulb out.

Do the lighbulbs underneath the microwave screw in or pull out- in the process of trying to change the burnt out bulb- i broke the bulb off of the base.

Most moderately new microwaves have a two prong pin type connector that is simply pushed strait in and pulled strait out. I presume the you tried turning it out when it broke?

Unplug the microwave oven and get a needlenose plier and a flashlight. Wear some hand protection since you are working with broken glass.

Most of the bulbs I have seen are screw thread mounts.

For the bulb with the broken glass, use the needlenose plier and try to find the screw thread for the bulb. It should be screwed in to the lamp socket of the microwave. Carefully grab a hold of the outer edge of the bulbs screw thread and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it from the base. You may only be able to turn it a quarter turn before letting go of the bulb's thread and getting a grip on a new position to continue turning. Inch your way to remove the broken bulb's thread.

If the other bulb still lights up, I'd leave it alone.

I have a light bulb that broke and I cant get it out, does it push in or screw in?

Chances are it is a boyonet base bulb. Unplug or turn off the power to the microwave. To remove the bulb, press in lightly, turn the base of the bulb counter-clockwise about 20 degrees till it stops, then it should pull straight out.

Surface and night light bulbs

If the model number you have this listed under is correct, the bulb you need is part #AP2029997, made by GE. You can also purchase these bulbs at any hardware store. They are the half sized small base, 40 watt bulbs. If you can't find 40 watt, make sure you use a lower wattage rating. If you have questions, or if the model number is incorrect, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

The vent fan and surface light do not work

1. Check your circuit breaker for this m/w. Reset it.
2. Microwaves usually have 20A fuse inside. It could be broken.

Broken bulb

From what others have said, it will come out, but you have to use some strong good needle nose pliers to turn the base in the socket.

I also have had a problem with the glass part of the surface light bulb separating from the metal base when trying to change the bulbs under my G.E. Spacemaker Microwave.. I see someone used a carrot or potato but I had not seen this suggestion before I whittled one end of a wine cork small enough to insert into the metal part of the old bulb stuck in the socket. It also worked great and in no time I was able to get the old base out and replace the bulb. I'll save the cork for next time because it seems to happen to at least one of the bulbs everytime they need to be changed. DON'T FORGET TO UNPLUG THE MICROWAVE FIRST!
