Question about Compaq 17" Flat Screen CRT Monitor

2 Answers

Need to over-ride built-in speakers so desktop speakers work. Ever since I hooked up my Compac W17q monitor, the built-in speakers have taken over, but I want my desktop speakers for sound instead. How can I achieve this? Thank you for your ideas and assistance. My email address is lynnbroadway@gmail.com Thanks again, Lynn

Thank you for your suggestion, and I should have mentioned I already tried that. I do have Windows XP, went to Control Panel, selected Sounds and Audio Devices, went to Advanced, then selected Desktop Speakers, but still the monitor speakers are all I'm getting sound from. I don't have speaker plug-ins in my monitor, and I checked out the menu button on the monitor but there's nothing about speakers.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated...in fact, if you help me with this, you'll be my hero!

    Thanks again, Lynn

Not sure if you ever found an answer but I had the same problem and believe I just figured it out;. My HP monitor has a plug/input for headphones. I just plugged my desktop speakers into the headphone slot.

Assuming your using a Windows operating system, you need to got to the sound settings and set your computers soundcard as the preferred output device. (Its under Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices in XP)

I cannot hook up the sound to my computer

The W2053TQ does not have built-in speakers. You will have to use a separate set of desktop speakers. The quality of the speakers built-in to any monitor is generally poor so you will probably be happier with desktop speakers anyway.

No sound from speakers

Ok newer monitors come with a HDMI connector and would need a compatable HDMI video card that has the ability for sound. The older monitors have a 3mm plug like a head phone jack you can plug this directly into the GREEN portion of the sound card that is installed in your system!

I can not tell in my monitor has speakers

Most monitors do not have built in speakers and the ones that do have them are usually of fair quality. Look for speaker grills under your monitor's screen. Didn't find speaker grills? You can buy computer speakers at a computer store or at Walmart. Your computer, desktop or laptop, has a green jack that you plug a set of speakers into. The volume control may be on the speakers or on your keyboard.

No speaker hook up on new moniter

If your old monitor was a Compaq, it had slots for the speakers to hang on and provided the power for the speakers. The speakers still got their input from a cable that plugged into the computer sound output jack. If those speakers are the style Compaq supplied when I worked at a Compaq service shop, they originally came with metal stands that fit into slots on the back so you could stand them up on their own, and a 12-volt power adapter so you could use them without the monitor. If you don't have those pieces, you can buy a suitable power adapter (12 volts DC at 1 amp) at Radio Shack but the speaker stands are hard to find. You could try eBay, or just make a holder of some kind. (A friend of mine used those little wooden stands you can buy to display plates to hold her speakers when she got a new monitor. They worked out pretty well.)

Or you can replace the speakers. A new set would have everything you need. But those Compaq speakers sounded pretty good, so if they're still working you might want to keep them.

Speakers dont work

They are built into the monitor, however there is a cable that needs to be connected from the speaker socket of your sound card (normally colour coded green) to the audio in on the back of your monitor.  If this is done already, you need to check your volume settings on both your PC and on the monitor (remembering to check for any "Mute" settings)
