My dell inspiron 530 shows a block with red, white, green, and read, can't get to the my programs????

That "red white green and blue" block is a color pattern tester. that means the monitor is on, but is not receiving a signal, so its running tests. If your monitor has Digital input and VGA input, you may just need to switch inputs. Look for 1 or VGA if youre using the blue hook up. look for 2 or digital or dvi if youre using the larger white hook up. Some monitors also have 'auto detect'. If you are in "auto detect' bbut the color box is still there, then your monitor is not receiving video signal from the computer. It could indicate a bad cable or no signal being sent by the machine. If you try another monitor, you can see if the machine is working. I would try a monitor setting for VGA-1 first, since thats most common.

Power on - blank (black) screen

Disconnect the monitor signal cable from PC and switch on your monitor. It should show some logo with Red, Green and Blue colors with a message similar to "No signal". If so, your monitor is working fine. Sometimes if the brightness and contrast is set to zero using controls present in the monitor, it will not show up anything. check wheather somebody set your monitor brightness and contrast to zero. If so incease them. As a last try connect to different PC and check before approaching a service center. I hope this will help you out. :)

Computer powers up, but monitor shows a self test

Your video output is bad. Either the video card, or the onboard video built into the computer. You need to swap out the card or add a card to bypass the built in video port on your computer.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

Still having trouble with EMachines T3882

I feel your pain. I finally moved my pc to a room with no windows! But seriously, try a different monitor first. See if you can borrow someone's to just try it before you do anything else. If that borrowed monitor works fine, then you know what the problem is. (Which I believe is the problem.) By the way, what started all of your problems?

Problem with the monitor

Hi,

The three boxes represent the built-in diagnostics of the monitor. The letters G is green, B is blue and R is for red, the 3 color guns of the picture tube of your monitor. The words "Self Test" indicates that it is in diagnostic mode since it has powered up, it is also then expecting a video signal from a source to be coming in; the display "Check Your PC And Signal Cable" indicates that it is not receiving any video signal from the source which is your PC or more specifically the PC's video card; and the display "Monitor Working" indicates that the diagnostic has determined that nothing is wrong with itself and therefore it has got to be your PC that is in question. The intermittent appearance of the boxes is when the diagnostics restarts itself and eventually finds the same problem.

To determine if it is the PC or the monitor, use another PC (even a laptop with matching VGA output) and try it with your Compaq monitor, see it it will work or alternately, try a different monitor to connect to your PC. The outcome will determine which is at fault.

If you have determined/verified that it is indeed the PC, you should focus on the video/graphics card. In some PC models/versions, the graphics/video is built-in to the motherboard and you should check the memory since this is shared. The only way is to replace either.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things worked out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
