I have a seagate goflex 1tb external drive. The drive is not recognized by the usb 3.0 adapter unless I only use the very short seagate cable that came with the goflex. I need the extra length but off the shelf 3.0 cables don't work. Any suggestions?

Can you see it under "Device Manager" or "Disk Management"?
To get to device manager and disk management click "Start"-> Type in "management" in the little white bar at the bottom and click "Computer Management".

Try Testdisk to see if there are any issues with the drive and if necessary repair or create a new boot sector.

Please try one of the following options.

Try different USB ports.
If that didnt work, then try updating/reinstalling your USBdrivers.
Try after these options a reboot first.

I don't think so you have described properly your problem.

1. USB cable to Casing its completely a USB Device/Drive so where you plugged it?
2. "The Laptop does not see the drive or the USB adapter when its plugged in" you mean BIOS?
3. Windows 7 Pop Up Autoplay window what opens when you try to open it?

What I recommend is reformatting the drive under Computer Management, and seeing if that fixes the problem.

i think its because its usb 3 usb 2 how old is your ibm laptop if its really old they only have usb 1
