Check your fuel cap. If not venting properly, gas can be forced to places it shouldn't be. I also agree with carb over haul. If alot of gas in oil & alot of gas outta exhaust, lean towards carb issue.
those fluid drive transmissions fail on quite a few brands as they all use the same ones....replace the trans...they are expensive but still cheaper than a new mower.
