Question about Hitachi PC Desktops

1 Answer

Hi I have a Hitachi Travelstar Model: HTS548060M9AT00 DATED JAN 05 that was in my Windows 2000 Dell Laptop. When I try to start up. It starts clicking and then the computer says "boot error" and doesn't recognize that there is a hard drive plugged in. What can I do? How can I fix this and get the data from the hard drive? Thanks

Go to this site
and download either the bootable diskette image or the bootable CD image to create a bootable floppy or CD. Will needed a working computer to do this on and a working floppy or CD drive on the faulty computer. Once the troubleshooting floppy or CD is made, load it into your faulty computer and reboot that computer. If the bios on the fault computer is set to allow booting first from floppy or CD, the troubleshooting routine will be loaded by the computer as it boots up.
If you are interested in saving any data, do not format your faulty drive and do not write ' 0 ' s to the drive in the troubleshooting routine.
These troubleshooting routines will only work for Hatachi drives of your model series, waste of time to try to use them on other manufacturers' drives.
It sounds like your drive has met it's maker, the clicking you mention is normally a ' dead ' giveaway, but it may be possible that the Hatachi troubleshooting routine can help in some fashion.
Best of luck, you will probably need it.

If your computer is a Dell then you can download and install the latest drivers from their WEB site.
You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site, the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop, better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on thebottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Taglabel is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where thespecific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you selectthe Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Apart from these issues, you could also face startup problem due to a power failure in the middle of BIOS update or any other form of update in the system. My daughter has a dell laptop. the mouse is not working. she wasn't able to right click now she can't use it at all. she feels she might have disabled it.

Hi, most probably you are refering to the built-in touch pad on the laptop, because a mouse is actually an external device, which can also be used on a laptop. But, I am presuming that you are refering to the touchpad, rather than a mouse, since it is a laptop.
There are 2 possibilities :-
1) there my be a hardware failure, as far as the touchpad component is concerned. And how do you find this out ?
Is your duaghter's Dell Laptop still covered under Hardware Warranty from Dell ? If yes, then call Dell Hardware Technical Support 1-800-624-9896 (24/7) , (I am presuming that you are in the US) and they would diagnose (at no charge) whether there is any hardware failure with the laptop's touchpad component. If there is, then Dell would send you a technician and get it replaced.
If your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then Dell Dell Hardware Technical Support would charge you US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee, to provide phone support, in order to diagnose if the touchpad is defective or not.
Incase your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then try what is mentioned in point # 2 below, before you spend US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee.
2) The second and most likely reason for the issue is that the settings for the touchpad have been changed. You can get the settings corrected using the Dell Touchpad Utility. If you are using vista or windows 7, just type in " Dell Touchpad Utility " in the start search option, by clicking on the windows start logo on the left side of the taskbar, open the Dell Touchpad Utility, and correct the settings, for example, right click may be disabled, etc.
You may even re-install the driver for the touchpad, by going to www.support.dell.com, click on support for home users, Drivers and Downloads, then enter either the service tag of the Dell Laptop or select the model, you will get a concise list of drivers for your specific product model : from there, download & re-install the touchpad;s driver listed in Input Device Drivers, after which reboot the laptop and the issue most probably should get resolved.
It would have been nice to know the exact model of the Dell Laptop and the Operating System that is running on it.
But, please do try the above and I hope the issue gets resolved.

If the machine is a Dell with DellControlPoint, open start, run then type msconfig and hit enter. Choose the Startup tab and find the startup item named "Dell" with the Command from "C:\Program Files\Dell\Dell Control Point\Connection Manager\Dell.UCM.exe" and uncheck the box. Hit Ok, then reboot your computer.
