Question about Maytag Refrigerators

3 Answers

I have a Performa refrigerator by Maytag with Ice maker bought in 2000 -Model # PTB 1953 DRW. The Ice maker had frozen at spout that fills the tray in the freezer. I finally cleared the ice plug with an ice pick and a hair dryer. I may have damaged the "on/off" lever since it doesn't try to fill anymore. The lever does go up and down so I don't really know?? Can you send a diagram or a guess at what the problem may be. Thanks, Regina King

Clear all the ventilations which are below each trays and it will work properly.some thing is blocking the water to enter.if you have any technical knowledge you can follow further, but if donot have the perfect knowledge.its the job of the proper technician .as if some thing is damaged in trying. the refrigerator will cost you more for getting it repaired.at the present condition as you have explained it not in any kind of worse condition it can be easily repaired by technician with very less cost.thanks

Hi-

Here something i can suggest

1) If the icemaker doesn't make ice butyou can see the arm swing into motion and you hear a buzz for about 10seconds after it is finished, the water valve is asking for water thatisn't arriving. This means the valve and the solenoid are probablyokay, but the water supply is not. Be sure the water supply line isn'tkinked behind or beneath the refrigerator (¼-inch copper tubing is muchbetter than plastic fill line).

2)Check to see if something has caused ice to back up around themechanism—this can cause the fill tube to freeze, blocking themechanism. When ice cubes are small and seem to be getting smaller, itgenerally indicates a frozen fill tube.

3)Check the water line that enters the back of the freezer for ablockage. Find the water shut-off valve behind the refrigerator orunder the sink, turn it off, unscrew the copper line from the back ofthe refrigerator, put the copper line in a bucket, turn on the valve, and see if pressurized water pours out.

4)Check the tap valve; a bad tap valve may cause the problem where theicemaker's supply tube connects to the water pipe. If necessary, replace the inlet valve and the tap valve. For the tap valve, use thetype that requires you to drill a ¼-inch hole (as opposed to the"self-piercing" type). You can do this yourself, or call a repairpersonor plumber to install an inline water filter when replacing the valve.

NOTE:The water line attaches to a solenoid at the back of the refrigerator, and then travels to the icemaker. The solenoid may be defective or maynot be receiving power. You can try removing the sediment screen insidethe solenoid and flushing it with water to clean it; be sure to inspectany seals or diaphragms. Unplug the refrigerator first. Unless you'reskilled at home repairs, this job is better left in the hands of anappliance repairperson.

HI,

The ice maker has completely stopped producing ice Check to see whether the ice maker has been turned off. Here's how to check. Look for a wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If this wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. On some units you simply lower the wire to the down position to turn the ice maker on. On others, you lower a small red plastic lever to lower the wire. If the wire is in the proper position check the freezer temperature, it should be between 0-8 degrees Fahranheit. If it is warmer than 10-12 degrees, the ice maker may not produce any ice. Check your door seals and thermostat, repair/replace as necessary.

Where do I find the ice maker inlet water valve or solenoid? The valve on the back of my fridge has only one hose going to both the water dispenser and ice maker and the water dispenser works fine.

Since there is water that flows to the water dispenser, the water valve is working. Now, there's a spout that water flows from to the icemaker tray. Look for it. It's located on the back wall inside the freezer and maybe behind the icemaker tray. Check and see if it's frozen. If so, defrost your freezer by turning the temperature gauge to off position. Wait a while until it's defrosted, then turn it back on.
Next, make sure that the metal wire is in down position.

If that doesn't work, your icemaker maybe defective and needs replacement.

Ice maker no longer making ice. A few weeks ago the water that was supposed to fill just the ice tray, didn't turn off, overflowed the ice tray and proceeded to fill the ice basket underneath. Since then...

Sounds like the water flowed enough to freeze the end of the fill tube shut. Best to prepare to replace the dual water control valve on the rear and near floor of refrigerator. If it was leaking and you should thaw the tube you need to turn the main supply of water off until replaced. Then thaw tube and replace the dual control valve. I will return with a part number providing your model number is correct, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Assuming it's not still under warranty, I would probably replace the icemaker components inside the freezer.

The repairman's "fix" indicates that there is some kind of problem with the "brains" of the icemaker. It would probably not be cost effective to try to diagnose and fix the problem.

Whirpool Gold Refrigerator Ice Maker not making ice

Hi: It is a separate line. If the tube to the ice maker was not clogged with ice itself that is not your problem. The ice maker is thermally proctected and will not make ice unless the freezer is actually at zero degrees F. Not just frozen. The plastics in a freezer will be soft when warm even easily melt, but be hard when at operating temps. Just try setting your freezer colder to see if it kicks in. Give it at least 24 hrs. Don't do the human nature thing and open it every hour to see if it makes ice. You will just dump the cold air out. Listen for the ice to dump into the tray. I hope this helps, Jeff
