Be sure that you are not in a buttonhole stitch. If the stitch selector is in a buttonhole stitch pattern, it is normal to sew backwards. Also, check and be sure the machine length is not set in a stretch stitch. That can be another source of the problem.

Thanks,

Bonnie

Machine will only sew in reverse

You wrote,
"Machine will only sew in reverse - Sewing Machines" A: I'm just a tinkerer, hobbyist, who did run across this same problem before. I can give a general non-model specific remedy based on my limited experience with mechanical sewing machines that get locked into sewing backwards, that is "they only want to sew in Reverse":

1. Verify what is the normal direction of the fly wheel in forward sewing for your machine. Most sewing machines, including Singers, always sew with the top of the flywheel moving toward the operator, regardless if sewing forward or backwards; but older friction-wheel White Rotary (RF) sewing machines, have the flywheel running in the opposite direction (top of Hand-Wheel turning away from the operator when sewing.

2. If it has Reverse Lever/Switch; check that it is in the correct position; if still only sews in reverse, change positions of the Direction Control lever (or Button, etc.), and see if it changes direction to correct the problem.

3. If this does not help, then jiggle the Reverse Lever and follow the linkage inside the machine and see if there is anything broken, loose or out of adjustment. Some machines have reverse control linkage elbows in the top part of machine, and by poor design are prone to accidentally pop backwards, causing sewing in the opposite direction of the position of the Reverse Lever/Button (Backwards when you want to sew Forward). On occasion, a Kenmore 158.1787180 got locked into the backwards sewing mode (the dog-gone' est thing), but by following and analyzing the linkage, I found where it was going wrong, and popped the indecisive linkage elbow back the way it was supposed to be and fixed it. [ I had more detailed notes, on this fix, but when I read them, without the machine in front of me, made no sense to me today so I can't share that till I revisit the conundrum again.]

4. If all else fails, you may be able to hold or clamp the Reverse Lever/Button in the Reverse position, so it sews Forward (I've done this before too (as a short-term fix) until I figured out how to adjust it back the way it was supposed to be.

5. If this post helped you, don't be afraid to indicate so, so Fixya will know. If it was useless, "ouch", but I'd like to know that too, so I'll be more selective on what I really know more about. I try to help, though this is probably a trade secret that anyone who knows is discrete about who they share the information with.
Sincerely

Is there a reverse switch? where

Depends on your machine. Consult your owner's manual.

On a lot of older machines, the Stitch Length Selector will reverse if the lever is pushed all the way up. Some really old machines do not have a reverse, so what you have to do is sink the needle in the fabric, lift the presser foot, and swivel the fabric 180 degrees so you can stitch back over the previous stitches.

Newer computerized machines will have a button, lever, or switch sometimes labeled with a reverse arrow.

My machine is sewing in reverse how do I get it to go forward

if your reverse is a lever then pull the lever down to normal sewing

if it's a button, try pushing it several times & try to see if that will help it unstick

if it doesn't use some wd-40 on it & see if that will work,,& keep working the button

I have an old sewing machine in my attic, i just recently put it to use. but i cant seem to find the reverse stitch button. im only 14, it was my moms sewing machine. but shes no longer with us, so im...

I've got a Kenmore sewing machine and the back stitch is a button/lever on the front of the machine. It has to be held down when you want to back stitch, because when you let it go it stitches forward again. Hopefully that helps, I'm not sure what yours looks like. ( I couldn't find pictures of your model online anywhere.) :)

Feed dog lever not working on my Kenmore 385 24 stitch machine

I surfed around this site for various suggestions, finally took the bottom plate off and cleaned and oiled all the parts along that rod that goes right across (think it's a drive bar that rotates). Ran the machine without thread in for a few minutes to let the oil soak in. Machine now works fine.

My reverse doesn't work either :(

Check the spring inside of the sewing machine. You have to take it apart and look at the spring where the reverse lever is located.

Will not sew in reverse.

sometimes it is the spring, open the machine up and take a look at the spring, it may be broken or stretched. It should be located right where the reverse lever is, inside.

I cannot get my newhome sewing machine to go into reverse!

There is a lever/switch on the right side of the jead of the machine. It is the very botton one...that controls the reverse stitch.

Reverse lever

lever must be locked in. if possible, you must open it and try to look for something blocking it. maybe a faulty spring or something.

Stuck in reverse

The reverse button is attached to link that moves a lever to make the machine sew in reverse. The lever is spring loaded so it returns to forward sewing when the button is released. Either the spring has come off or there is a bind in the lever(oil it). In order to solve the problem, the covers must be removed.
