Hello, first of all problems my car failed emmissions took it to a mechanic and things went not so well. Codes of trouble were P0442 & P0456 mechanic fixed the issue, but when I was gonna drive away from his property I stepped on the brake putting the car in gear as you would. But, the gear was like butter it just moved with no effort and when I did get it to drive I released the break accept the car jerked a lil bad, so I went to step on the break and couldn't the thing was locked as a matter of fact when I did step on it hard to the floor the car accelerated a lil on its own. I got scared and had no choic but to pull emergency break and put it in gear. Went back in to shop told owner he took it back in and I dont know what he did, but it worked I drove away now I look and less than 5 months later the check engine light is back on. Can you help me as to solutions? Not wanting to go back there but seeing as the problem started there I would have no choice and not looking forward to a bill for false repairs unless I sue him. Thanks..

The fact that you don't know what the guy did when he took the can back in is a concern, because it gives no clue as to the problem being associated with the original fault or not. If you didn't get an explanation, then its a little unfair to sugest that you might get billed for false repairs. The fact that the car has run for 5 months since would suggest that whatever he did was a good fix anyway. The check engine light being on doesn't indicate that the fault is the same this time and it will need some diagnostics to figure out what the engine management system has recorded this time. The fact that the problem started there (and by the way it didn't... It started before you went there), doesn't lock you into having to go back. Any good mechanic will pick up the issue from fresh and sort it out for you. By the way, the original errors of P0442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak) and

P0456 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (very small leak)
sound very unlikely indeed to be related to the issue you describe with the gear select, I'd go so far as to say there was no way they were connected and the guy probably did some good work for you

Go to your nearest Auto Zone store and have them put their computer on your vehicle, to see what code comes up (IT FREE). They should let you know what the problem it...if not....let me know what the code is and I will let you know what is wrong..Hope this helps you ??

A new knock sensor was installed, new air filter, new hose-old was leaking antifreeze. The engine light went off but came back on 30 to 40 minutes later. The computer was reset on two different...

Ok.. the p0328 is in fact a bad knock sensor. I would suggest that someone replaced it incorrectly or the wrong one.. maybe even the wrong part.

p0442 is a small leak in some part of the evap system. Faulty gas cap can cause this but if it was not there before I would suggest the shop knocked something loose or cracked a hose during their repair.

p0456 is a large leak in the same evap system. Likely related to the p0442.

Good luck.

Check engine light on codes p0442 p0456 p0513

P0442 and P0456 are both evaporative emission error codes due to a small leak. The most common cause is a leaking gas cap or hose leak on that system. I did not list a code for your 0513. I am sending you a little information about your problem.. Best of Luck to you..

2003 Lexus RX300 3.0L 2003 Toyota Sienna 3.0L 2003 Toyota Highlander 3.0L, Eng Cfg V6, Eng Des 1MZFE, USA/Canada 2004 Toyota Avalon XL 3.0L
Check engine light is on with trouble codes P0442 and P0456. The codes are evaporative system small leak codes.
1. Verify that the gas cap is a factory Toyota gas cap and visually inspect that all hoses and lines are tight and connected.

2. Locate the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve on the canister. Manually ground them and verify that they operate and function. The canister closed solenoid is normally open and should close when grounded. The vacuum switching valve on the canister is normally closed and needs to open when grounded.

3. Verify that the hoses are not loose or pulled off the canister closed valve on the air cleaner housing. This has been a common problem on some models.

4. If no problem is found, the next step is to ground the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve under the vehicle and simulate an evaporative test and verify that the system holds a vacuum and functions normally. When the solenoids are grounded, back probe the Blue/Black (L/B) wire on the pressure sensor, and with no vacuum or pressure, the voltage should read around 3.3 volts. Start up the vehicle and turn on the purge vacuum switching valve and use engine vacuum to draw down the system to around 2 volts on the pressure sensor. If the voltage does not increase rapidly, there is no problem. If the voltage increases quickly, look for the leak in the evaporative system. Potential Causes: Canister Closed Valve
Disconnected Canister Closed Valve (CCV) Hose
Gas Cap
Harness
Vacuum Switching Valve - For the pressure sensor.

What emissions component has a problem with codes P0456 and P0442 on a 2004 Mazda RX8?

P0456 Is for the EVAP System. Small leak detected, check the seal on your gas cap.

P0422 Is for the Catalytic Convertor efficiency is below threshold. Meaning it isn't doing its job, you may have a bad downstream O2 sensor but more than likely you have a bad Catalytic Convertor.

Having the same problem the other guy described.

First of all, these codes are what are called "Powertrain Trouble Codes' (that's what the "P" means P=Powertrain). TCM Request (Transmission Control Module = TCM). The request was to turn on the 'Check Engine" light.
P0720 - output speed sensor circuit malfunction
P0715 - Input speed sensor (turbin speed) circuit malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Small Leak)
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
Check fuel filler cap problems - for Evap Emiss leaks
Replace the pulse generators & have the trans fluid replaced/flushed.
The Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Is P0420, not P0442
If you had P0420 code, the catalytic converter is shot... and that's an expensive component.

CODES,P0442,P0455,P0456,P1684

P0442, P0455 AND P0456 are all evaporative leak monitor test failures (small, medium and large leaks). These codes appear anytime the integrity of the air space above the fuel or the lines to/from the vapor canister or purge valve. If there is no damage to the canister, check the lines that run under the van from the fuel tank and canister to the purge valve (under the hood). Also, check to make sure that the hoses are not split or disconnected where they connect to the purge valve. The P1684 is abit more confusing. This is not a valid DTC for your vehicle. It's possible the scanner the shop you went to is an OTC scanner that is reporting a false code. It's also possible they wrote it down incorrectly. The closest thing that makes any sense is a P1486 which would indicate a pinched hose in the same monitor system as the other 3 codes. Best of luck!
