    Hi,
do you see the power LED on when you start the system

if the power led is in do you see any thing on the screen or it is blank always not for even a second you see any thing.

if you see windows logo at computer start and then it goes blank it might be a driver problem.

Step 1:
WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source. Some of the below steps recommend removing physical parts within the computer. While in the computer it is highly recommend that you be aware of ESD and its potential hazards Causes a Computer Monitor to Go Blank b> While a blank screen may be caused by a general power outage, more often it's a problem with the screen itself. It could be a loose video or power cable going to the monitor. If that's the case, you can get the screen working again and be back in business in a few minutes. b> Power Problems All the power might be off due to a bad outlet, switch, fuse, or circuit breaker. If you hear no sound coming from the computer and its power light is off, check the power connection and breaker or fuse. Video Cable Many times the cause of monitor blackouts is a loose video cable connection. This might happen if you move the monitor or the cable. The video cable runs from the back of the computer to the monitor. It has a multi-pin connector on each end and both of them screw down securely. If the screws aren't tight, either connector could become loose. If that happens, the video signal could stop suddenly and make the picture go blank. Check both ends of the connector to make sure they're firmly seated and the screws are tight. The cable itself might be bad. This is unlikely, but possible. b> Display Power The monitor must have power. If the power light isn't lit on the monitor, it may have been turned off or become unplugged. Press the power button to make sure it wasn't accidentally turned off. Make sure the monitor is plugged in. If it's connected to a power strip, check that the power strip is on. If that checks out, unplug the monitor and try a different outlet. Power strip sockets can sometimes fail. Flat-screen monitors may have a power-brick-style adapter. It, too, has connectors. Follow the power cable from the monitor's power plug back to the monitor. About halfway up you'll find a thick rectangular plastic brick. The power goes into a modular-style equipment socket. This can become loose. Follow the wire the rest of the way to the monitor. It connects to the back of the screen with a small round plug. Check that it's firmly plugged in. If everything's plugged in right and the power light on the monitor's still off, the power brick might be bad. b> Video Card Some computers have a separate video card inside. It may come loose and cause a blank screen. If this is the case, open the computer and inspect the video card. Sometimes removing and reseating the card will fix the problem. If it has to be replaced, most video cards are not expensive.

Gateway ZX4000 all in one - the screen is black

Sounds like the Video Card is bad. Try plugging an external monitor into the laptop and see if it works. Any monitor will do, even the big fat old crt monitors. Look at your keyboard and normally there will be a sequence of keys you will have to hit to get the video on the external monitor. Normally you would bress the FN (Function Key) and hold it while pressing some other key such as F4 or F8. The key to press will probably have a picture of a monitor display on it or the wording crt/lcd

If it displays on the external monitor that means your video card is ok and your screen on the laptop is the problem and either needs to be replaced or it could be that the cables have come loose in which case the lcd monitor needs to be disassembled and the cables reseated.

One other thing, take a flashlight and shine it on the lcd screen to make sure that the icons are not there but are too dark to see. If you can barely see the icons with the flashlight that means the LCD Inverter is bad and needs to be replaced. The guys at: http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.com can help and they are very reasonable. They will fix it and ship it back to you by Fedex or UPS. Get a quote from a local source then try them.

When i turn it on it wont show desk top it stays on a black screen

Does your laptop have its lights on the keyboard even if your screen is black? If it is , try to remove the cables and battery of the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 8 seconds. Then reinsert the cables and battery on the laptop. Turn on the laptop, and if there is no light on screen & keyboard, it means that the power supply or the motherboard has trouble. That is the time to contact Dell support for possible repair or replacement. Otherwise if the keyboard has lights but the screen is still black, that would be a video card problem since the LCD screen is not a separate entity. Just make sure if it has the power button on the screen, it is turned on. That instance would need a video card replacement...

I think its the whole motherboard to get the card because you cannot buy them.
An if they can be sourced would be talking about 150 or 200 an with fitting about 240 so not really worth it sell it as spares unless u can get a faulty 1 off ebay with broken screen or something like that

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

Screen goes black when plugged in

The high pitch sound is most likely a faulty inverter. Most defective screen are caused by a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :- To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

It sounds like your Video card and/or motherboard are starting to give out or your LCD is giving way. Try plugging the laptop into an external screen and see if it still acts strangely or even displays on the external monitor.

Black Screen

try hooking up an external video source. Check to see if the computer is actually booting up. if the computer boots up, then the LCD invertor or Backlight of the screen is bad, need to be replaced.

If the computer does not boot up after hooking up an external video source, then most likely your motherboard is bad!

need to be replaced.
