I have a similar problem. While playing an online game, I got a screen that said "Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect your computer ". Could it also be the hard drive?

This is most likely going to be a failed hard drive. Since it won't load the system, by general rule, If the hard drive won't format, or if you have any issues during or after the set up of a new operating system, then the hard drive is shot, and needs replaced. Replace the drive and you should be just fine.

My laptop says no bootable instert disk

sounds like its not picking up or hard drive HDD or that its not booting from it 1st thing to check is if ur system sees the hdd u can see it in the bios on the first screen where it starts booting up and says ur manifacturer itl say something like press f2 to enter bios press it look around till u find the primery hdd is one showing or is it saying not found ? if showing itl say manifacturer and size ie samsung e123 500G or something once u checked exit without saveing

if it dont show u have a bad connection or a broken hard drive check connections

and let us know the results and a little more info on how u get to this message would help us i expect its the case u cant get windows to load up u just get this error message because the laptop cant comunicate with the hard drive and windows is loaded on that hard drive

it could be that its seeing ur hard drive however the operateing system is too badly corrupted to run

if this is the case laptops often have a backup made at the plant u press a cuple of keys at start up to run a restore im not sure what keys off hand

or you can start in safe mode running only basic parts of the os enough to get on and fix things

failing that if ur picking up the drive just fine and cant get ur old operateing system to run reinstall the os ( windows etc )

going by the info given id say its dead or poor connection to the hdd given that its a lap top its less likely to have a bad connection because there is no wire it slots straight in to the board so chances are its dead but till u check the bios to see if its being picked up at all who can tell

yes there is usualy a small message on the starting up screen where the motherboard detects installed hardware and it shuld say it there not detected point is check the cmos see if ur picking up ur primery hdd and we will go from there

I am unable to get windows xp to load onto my ASUS A2500H anymore. Everything was working fine for a long time, even with an external HDD attached until today. All of a sudden the laptop died and when...

The best you can try is to remove the external HDD and see if computer boots..

If it does, you know where the problem is..

If it doenst, reboot computer, start tapping F8, if you get advance boot options, try to boot computer with Save Mode, Perform system restore from save mode.

If the above doesnt work, you need to perform repair installtion of Windows XP.

My acer is not getting past a start screen, its loads an error on a black screen, saying it cannot locate the operating system. It will allow me to go to set up but I'm not sure what I'm doing?

This error comes out when the pc cannot find the hard disk.
Does the bios detect it? What is the exact error?
If the error you get is NTLDR missing you should install again the operating system (i.e. Windows)
If the error you get is no bootable device can be an hardware problem. Please check the connection of your hard disk. If connection is good you may want to remove the hard disk and buy a new one. The old hard disk you can put into a usb drive and copy your personal data so you can have it back.
If with the new hard disk you are not successful it could be a motherboard problem and you should take it to assistance

I have an older model hp laptop. Recently while trying to work in Windows Live, I belive that I removed Windows XP. I cannot find the CD-ROM to re-load this. Can you help? Thank you Debbie

If you have uninstalled your operating system you have to have the cd to reinstall. newer laptops come with built in restore but i am not sure how did u uninstall it if you were just playing with windows live because windows live is just a part of msn or hot mail program for like email or chatting. Make sure it was not really the operating system that you uninstalled and the way to know is if the computer starts up but there are some errors it means it is just a drivers, program or system issue but can be fixed. If it comes with black screen and it says can not find operating system or something along those lines that means no OS. Hope this helps. In any case you need the cd and you can call the manufacturer and ask for replacement.

My dell inspiron 1525 has a black screen with a white cursor showing

First, I want to know if you sees the Dell logo after turning on the laptop? If yes then this is no boot issue.
1. Immediately run the PSA. Make sure laptop is off. Press and hold down the Fn key, while holding down Fn key press the power button at the same time just once. Once the Dell screen loaded you can now let go of the Fn key. Check if the PSA will run short test for the LCD, RAM and HDD. When full color displays on the screen just press Y. PSA will continue. Just take note of any error code will appear on the screen such as 0141, 0142 and 0146 these are HDD failure errors which means HDD needs replacement. If the test says no errors found then proceed to step 2;
2. Try restarting the laptop once you see dell logo then keep tapping F8. Select last known good configuration. Press enter key. Just wait and check if laptop will load Windows. If not then, restart laptop keep tapping F8 try to select safe mode check if it will load Windows. If not then prepare the Windows OS disc the one came with your laptop.
3. While laptop is on insert the Windows OS disc. Restart the computer. On the Dell screen keep tapping on F12 to show boot menu. In the boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive. Press enter then keep tapping on space bar until it will say Windows loading files, please wait.
4. In the User Interface it will show you some options to select. Once the Install screen comes up look on the lower part select Repair Your Computer. If will ask you to do Startup Repair, please do start up repair. If fails try the System Restore. If fails then step 5;
5. If you have important files in your HDD then back up your files first. After backing up of files you can now install the Windows OS. Here is the process in installing the Windows OS. Insert the Windows OS disc, restart the laptop, keep tapping F12 on Dell screen, on boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive.Install the Windows OS. Just complete the installation. After the installation install the laptop drivers.

OS Wont load

You need to reinstall operative system, either using recovery disk, or using a generic windows setup disk.
If the computer does not read recovery disk, then it is probably scratched or faulty.
System reinstall is usually done at any computer repair shop for a not too expensive fee.
When hard disk is damaged you often also hear a typical clicking noise, and system stop shortly after post.

Toshiba satellite with windows xp will only show black sreen and wont let windows xp repair

Your description of the symptom shows that your operating system installation has been corrupted. Fastest and easiest way to resolve the Issue using the "Recovery and application disk" (it comes with laptop) to perform full system recovery. I would like to remind you full system recovery will erase everything saved on Hard drive. You can check possible option on

If you dont have recovery and application disk you get one. You can call Toshiba @ 1-800-457-7777

Please post if you need further assitance
