Question about Garmin GPS Devices

I have a garmin nuvi. when we disconnected from the charge in the car, apparently it did not turn off and I guess the internal battery was run down. Now I can't start it when I plug it in. My wife lost the box it came in so I don't know what to do.

Try this:

Unplug the power and USB cables to remove external power
Place your thumbnail in the groove located under the Garmin logo on the faceplate and gently pull off the faceplate
Press the Reset button for 3-5 seconds
Connect the nuvi to a power source using the power cable

If after this still nothing the unit needs replacemnet already..

Hope that helps

You will need to charge up first.
Try and hold the power button for a few seconds

Will not turn on, with or without charging

The Nuvi 25x5 is well known for having issues with the rear USB port becoming loose or disconnected from the PC board. This will prevent the unit from powering up when connected to an external charging source. It will also prevent the internal battery from being able to be charged, so when the battery has exhausted its charge, the unit will be dead. This can be repaired. Nuvi 1390 will not power on.

Try pressing and HOLDING the power button for up to 15 seconds (or until it powers up - whichever happens first). This is a hard reset - and should get you going unless the battery is discharged.

Oddly, batteries can discharge when the GPS remains on the car charger. Disconnect it and connect to the your computer's USB port (or AC adapter if it came with one) over night. The computer must be ON - "sleeping" is ok too - just not "OFF". This will charge the internal battery.

If it will not accept a charge, you may need to replace the battery or return the GPS to Garmin for service.

I will be travelling in Europe without a car and no access to a computer. Is there a plug in adaptor for charging the battery? Can the battery be replaced, as needed?

Hello,

You can purchase AC international adapters for all nuvi units, here is a link to one http://www.gpscity.ca/garmin-nuvi-zumo-international-ac-adapter.html.. For your battery it will not be able to be replaced by you the user, I only recommend replacing it through an authorized Garmin repair center.

Hope this helps!

I turn it on stays on for couple of seconds and shut back down, a couple of times it say battery is low, has been hooked up to 12volt power connecter in my car for close to 2 days

Your Nuvi 760 needs a new battery: rechargeables don't last forever.

Garmin's hope is that when the battery fails then you'll buy a whole new Garmin or will send it to them to be replaced, but it's a straightforward task to do yourself. Buying a new unit might make sense though if your unit also has outdated maps and/or outdated traffic/speed camera subscriptions.

A number of online suppliers have suitable batteries and there's more than one YouTube video showing you how to replace the battery. Click here for an example. Note that the same battery is fitted to the identical Nuvi 770, the only differences between the models is that the 770 has a larger internal memory to enable it to carry full US, UK and European mapping.

If the GPS's internal battery is allowed to discharge too far, it will not be possible to recharge with the card charger, until it is brought up to a certain level. Connect the nuvi to a computer with USB cable overnight. This will trickle charge the internal battery to a level that will allow the car charger / cradle to keep the GPS charged from that point on. Anytime the car charger fails to recharge the internal battery, the USB charge method will have to be performed first.

I solved the problem by charging internal battery using the 120V. charger that came with the unit. I was not aware, that the cord in car was not charging my Nuvi and that it was running OK. until the battery was low and quit. I have to check this cord. Peter W.

Garmin 2005 will not charge, new in November of

Make sure the internal battery is charged by connecting it to your computer with the included USB cable. Make sure the computer is on and running. Let it charge at least a couple of hours and then try to turn the GPS on while still connected to the computer. If the unit still will not turn on you might need to return it to Garmin.

Garmin nuvi won't turn on

folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa

Internal battery won't charge

Common issue. Steps to troubleshoot/solve:
1. Pull off face, press reset tab.
2. If unit wont turn on or if turns off immediately, connect to home computer using mini usb on side of gps (any usb cord that fits will do). This will charge the internal gps battery, which is discharged.
3. You will not be able to see the gps charge indicator while the usb cord is plugged into the unit. To check charge level, disconnect it, turn it on, and note the large "battery" icon.
4 Do you have a dead internal battery? If the gps holds a charge from your computer usb port, you don't.
5. If you have a dead battery, Google DIY replacement. With some soldering it can done for $15 total.
6. If you don't have a dead battery, the issue is charging from the cigarette lighter socket. Your car socket may have blown a fuse (check car manual). Your charger unit may have blown a fuse (unscrew the tip, check fuse inside). Also, some car sockets don't work when the ignition is off. Test yours.
7. There is a good chance the connection of the charger wire to the gps cradle is the problem. Fiddle with that. Replacement cradles are available for the c340 at about $25.
8. If your unit is not charging from the cradle/socket, buy a 12v usb cord. Plug into socket and into usb port of the gps. This is a workaround or alternative to buying a new cradle.
9. IMPORTANT: observe the "battery" icon while driving, esp. if you have doubts about charging. Basically, if you can see the icon, you're not connected to an outside (car or computer) power source. That is, if you can see the battery-charge indication, it means your battery is currently discharging and unless you get another power source to work it will be dead in a few hours.
