I am trying to purchase some second hand front forks for my 1982 XJ 750, will a pair from a 1981 XJ 750 Maxim fit the same?

Very difficult to produce. The two frames is different.First one in Virago XV750 is open in front,second one is with closed frame on Yamaha XJ750.

Depends what you call major modifications. You are certainly going to need some high grade cutting and welding. Many would regard those as major modifications. Some would not! Additionally some basic research as to the length and diameter of the fork tubes will tell you a lot. I assume that you have worked out whether the length and alignment of the drive shaft is the same.
