Electric Mower Bridge Rectifier solution

Hello martu,

I have the MM875 mower and couldn't figure out what kept frying the switch until I read your solution. I bought a new rectifier, drop it in and bingo!

You saved me from buying a new mower.

THANKS!!

I have the mm675 18" flip-over handle model. But it seems to have similar workings. One day it just stopped running. I unscrewed the motor cover and noticed that a red wire had burned through where it plugged into an AC terminal on the bridge rectifier atop the motor. I re-attached and it ran OK for awhile, but soon stopped again. This time the terminal on the bridge rectifier to which the wire was attached had broken near its base. I replaced it with a new rectifier (#72256-03) from B&D, The mower ran for awhile, but soon stopped again. Yep, the same terminal on the new rectifier had broken in the same place. By this time, I began to suspect that the real culprit might be a dirty commutator (the copper surface at the top of the motor that the brushes rub against) -- it was black. So polished it to reveal the underlying bright copper with 600 grit sand paper. By then, I'd also determined that Radio Shack sells the same rectifier (RS #276-1185) for a just few dollars (B&D charges about $12.). So far, the mower's running fine. Hopefully, it's fixed. Case closed?

I question if Radio Shack #276-1185 is robust enough. That is only rated for 50 volts. I would recommend getting a part rated for at least twice the 120 volt input. On eBay, I found a rectifier # KBPC5010 rated for 1000 volts and 50 amps for only $2 if you don't mind waiting for shipment from Hong Kong. I ordered a couple of these to try out.

Shaft turns while trying to remove blade on B&D MM875 elec. mower

Here's the scoop on the MM875: it has a plastic piece called a "blade insulator" (part # 241381-01) that "locks" the shaft to the blade, so that you can remove the nut by stopping or blocking the blade. If it has been damaged or stripped out, then stopping the blade won't do anything. However, the metal spacer directly under the nut IS still locked to the shaft (because of its shape), so you can use a pipe wrench or something to hold that in place and unscrew the nut. You might even be able to get someone in a home improvement store to do this for you. But you will still need to replace the insulator, which is only a few dollars.

The rectifier is a flat plate with 4 posts that attach the electric wiring inside. You will need a flathead screwdriver to remove the four screws holding down the cover on your mower. on top where all the wires run (you will probably see one burned) There is a screw in the middle holding down the plate, you will need to replace the plate and resplice the wires that may be burned.

Switch diagram needed

Funny, I came here because I just opened up the switch case on my MM875. Hold the switch so the terminals are on top. Call the black switch (the part you push in to power up the mower) north. The north post gets white (metal connector). The west post gets red (plastic connector). The east post gets the black that comes from the mower's motor (plastic connector). The south post gets the black that comes from the outlet (metal connector)
(Black Plastic Switch)
White (Metal)
Red (Plastic) Black (Plastic--from motor))
Black (Metal--from outlet)

Motor has low torque

common complains for electric & cordless mower is that they are not ment for cutting on wet or dump grasses or long tall grasses they will bog down. for this type of unit blade should be extremely sharp. also clean the under the deck so you can better air flow for the blade. if your switch & rectifier are new & in right connection then have you armature check for short circuit..

Mower tripped outlet breaker - wiring schematic available?

I had a MM875 go out after some months' service -- it actually went out with a bit of a bang. The problem was a shorted circuit; the weather was hot and the "solid state switch" on top of the motor shorted out. This part wasn't a switch but a bridge rectifier. The original part was specified a bit close to its actual working limits so I bought another (from Radio Shack, no less) that was higher rating -- something like 30 amps at 200 or 400 volts. ITs worked for years.

If it is a bridge then it will have two terminals labelled '~' and one each with the '+' and '-'. The plus and minus go to the motor (keep those connections the same as the original) and the others go to the supply wires.

MM875 electric lawnmower

check motor if armature are not broken & see if the rectifier not burnt. rectifier works from ac & convert it to dc to run the motor.
if you need diagram for parts see toolpartsdirect.com
