Acer Aspire 5100 problem

Hello. This laptop is approx 16 months old. I left it on the table and left to take my kids to baseball practice when I came back I assumed the unit was in sleep mode. Wrong....it will not function. I have tried to do several things from removing battery, holding power for 30 seconds then replacing battery to reboot. I have also removed the hard drive and memory to reboot them. Also hooked it up to an external moniter. None of which have proved helpful. When I press power the power light comes on, I can hear the fan but the hard drive is active light is lit for approx 20 seconds then shuts down. I get nothing on my screen. I get no sound other than the fan.The only lights that are lit up are the power and the on/off button. The wireless is lit up also but very dim. Someone please help because Acer is of no help. Their service is terrible! I cannot get any answers.

That was my thoughts. Now the only other thing is occasionally when I try to turn it on I will get a couple beeps. Not all the time though. So I am pretty sure that it is the motherboard. What a piece of ****. $650.00 and it dies after less than a year and a half of life. What would cause the motherboard to die? Thanks!!

You don't want to hear this I know, but your symptoms are very much like those of a computer in which the motherboard or processor has died. It is defnitely not the hard drive as you would still get a display and be allowed to go into Bios even if the hard drive was totally out of the computer. And missing memory would result in bios beeps indicating a faulty bios configuration, but all of that requires that the motherboard and processor be good. If they are not, you have the situation you are speaking about.

Heat mostly will cause situation. A computer that can't get fresh cool air will die in a short time. I would hazard a guess that coffee table magazines or tissue dispensers or something akin to those may have led to the final demise. It is extremely wise to have your laptop raised on a level above other nearby objects and to have a cooling fan platform plugged in and sitting beneath the laptop as it helps with the cooling air supply to the inside of the laptop. I wish I could be of more help but I would have to be there to add anything of importance.

One other thing of note that I will add, you mention help from Acer and I would to add that help from Sony sucks also. I will not say that HP is better but I will say that their website is much much better then is Sony's or Acer's and I use all manufacturer website when I work on problems.....

I've got a password on my laptop and have not been able to remember it now for months, I have an Acer Aspire 7730 which is approx 4 or 5 years old now can you please help.

Just re-install the software again and your are done with this issue. Use the recovery disc that came with the computer or use a new Operating System disc be sure it is Windows that originally came or compatible with your computer. Then you can start fresh without any password needed until you do another one, HINT: I use my last four digits of my social so that I will never forget my password ever.
