There is a 'white paper' available on HP's website that specifically addresses this error message. I'm providing the link for you that will take you directly to that page:

Please read it and maybe print it out for reference... it explains what you need to do and THE ORDER you need to do it in. This should solve your issue...

Good Luck!

Can't scan- Refer to device documentation to

Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.

My printer is evidently installed correctly, since I am able to print OK, but I cannot scan, I get an error message when I press start scan and OK - "no scan option", and refer to "device documentation"

on your computer go to hp solution center..
under that go to settings..
then scan button settings..
over there add all options to the right side..
then try..

My Officejet Pro 8500 won't scan, although it did fine originally

It won't scan unless the HP scanning software is loaded and running on your PC, it needs to know where and how to scan, which is the scan options. It will scan and make a copy if you press copy, but it won't scan when you press scan unless that software is running.
