Question about Acer Aspire L100 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Status Didn't make it to Radio Shack but over the weekend did find enough time to harvest some 1000 mic caps from an old P II motherboard and replaced the bloated ones in the Acer. There is some improvement. Now when I press the front panel on switch, the fan comes on and will shut down if I hold the switch the required 9 seconds (before there was no response). There are no front panel lights, no video output and no apparent POST or boot activity.

Sounds like you could still have some blown caps on the 3V supply or worst still a blown regulator caused by excessive ripple from the faulty caps.

If the thing is now partialing powering up and your seeing fan activity the 12V and 5V rails are ok so im guessing theres a problem with the 3v3 rail. This could be down to more failed caps or a faulty regulator which could of been damaged by excessive ripple caused by the failed caps.

Best I can suggest is probing the regulators looking for the 3V3 rail, cant tell you which to probe as my boxes have been returned to the client now im afraid.

Dell Opitplex GX620 - "System

If you pull the side access cover off the computer tower, look inside and you will see a large circuit board, that is the Motherboard, on that board you will see a button sized silver battery, this is the battery backup for the "CMOS", and keeps the time and other memory functions alive. Carefully pry out the old battery and replace it with a new one, any Radio Shack or electroinics supply will have the battery. The battery number is on the battery. Make sure to install the battery exactly as it came out, it has a positive and negative side, write it down.

Internal battery is warning of low charge

No, it's not difficult. Just open the case and locate on the motherboard a round (about 2cm diameter) battery, like the one at the electronic watches, a little bigger. Push the little metal holder to the side in order to set free the battery. With the old battery as a sample buy a new one from a shop at your area, it is cheap enough.

I have an HP flatscreen monitor that worked great til the other day. Now it only stays on for about a second and then goes black. If I turn it off and then back on it again will only stay on for a...

i,m guessing that what has happened to your monitor is that there are caps (capasitors ) in a few of the monitors on the market today the company bought caps from capxon which is a bad company.... i see a lot of them in all types of systems anyway when the cap fails the screan fails most people throw the monitor away but the cost to fix it your self is about 1.25 cents
just open the monitor up unpluged of course
look for the cap that is not flat on top or has brown coming out of the bottom write the number down
( looks like 1000uf at 16volts ) example go to radio shack and get a new one soldering is not hard just be careful and put the new one in the same way as the old one ( remember + & - do count

They are just an intermittent contact switch. Finding the two wires to the motherboard and replacing it with a different intermittent switch from someplace like Radio Shack.

No 12 volt power output from my acerpower 1000 motherboard

This seems to have a motherboard none too dissimilar to that of a laptop. It's hard enough to get information on a typical desktop motherboard, and those for laptops are even more obscure. You are not however dead in the water yet. The power supplies usually have fuses on the board, they are usually either blue or green, sometimes have a little "hourglass" on them. You can check them with an ohmmeter. If you're lucky, there's one blown from an earlier fan or drive problem. Hope you can find it and a replacement.

If you are looking for the small silver battery on the motherboard, they are all the same.

They are 3V Lithium Cells. There are several brands and makes, but Maxell's number is CR2032. You can find these at Radio Shack, WalMart, and online.

If your headphones have a single plug you cannot plug these into a regular speaker connection or headphone connction and get mic and sound, you will need a headset that has 2 separate plugs (one for Mic and one for headphone) or a splitter you can get a radio shack. Most headsets have only one plug and there are connections for both the mic and the headphones on this plug, but the headphone connection on the computer has only connections for the headphone and therefore cannot detect the microphone.
