Question about Tomtom GO 300 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

TomTom Go300 I gave my daughter a TomTom Go300 about 5 years ago (bought from Circuit City). Because my daughter is stubborn and didn't want to rely on a GPS system, she never used it. She now wants to use it and we tried to update, but the computer recognizes that there is a device attached, but the TomTom doesn't recognize the computer. Can you tell me if there is a solution to this problem. I know the TomTom is one of the best, that's why I bought it. Thanks in advance for yoru help.

If you follow the instructions on the Tom Tom support site - It states

1) First download TomTom HOME version 1
it will update the boot code on the card
2) Install TomTom Home Version 2

TomTom map of Poland is hopeless. should get a free update on a new device. There are a lot of new roads in Poland and the device which I bought 2 months ago does not take it into account at all. Can't...

You will only get a free update on a new device if you install tomtom home on your computer and login withing the first 2-3 months of purchasing your device. Also, if you purchased a device that is "refurbished" or "recertified" then you do not get this free update and your map can be up to about a year and a half old. In this case, you would have to purchase a map update. To update you will have to install TomTom Home on your computer (download from TomTom.com) and login. You can typically purchase one update for about 45 USD or purchase a year of updates for just a little more (like 59.99 USD). A "year of updates" gives you an updated map each quarter for one year. I don't know that I would have bought a TomTom for use outside of North America or the UK. Sorry.

Not sure what TomTom model I have.

tomtom ONE and 2nd edition are almost the same unit...one needs a SD card to make the unit work, the other unit has the SD card for optional space

in regard to the map, try: www.tomtom.com/10541

Threatening shut down

It is probably your internal battery and needs replacement. There is a menu function to not shutdown when loss of power (under battery preference, after screen save). If you don't use the battery, try this.

My tom tom go 300

Your tom tom go 300 may be frozen. If it has a reset button, then try resetting it. If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged and let it die. Then try turning it back on and see if it works then. If it doesn't, then you might have to update the software using this website which has instructions: http://www.bashys-place.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14685

GPS

I found a toll free number for TomTom, called and actually got a real person. My computer recognized the TomTom (TomTom home was version 7. something); my TomTom unit had software that was too old and it did not recognize the TomTom home. Catherine in tech support sent me a download to update the software and it worked. Thanks for getting back to me. I am attaching the link for anyone that needs to update software in their TomTom GO 300:

TomTom Home

I had a similar problem when trying to update my dad’s old TomTom Go300. I bought a new map and downloaded TomTom Home 2 (as instructed on the website) but found that the Go300 was recognised by the computer it wasn't recognised by TomTom's own Home 2 software.

To cut a long story short I uninstalled Home 2 and downloaded Home 1 (from http://www.tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=17 Home 1 is the one on the right, listed as being the version of Home you use for Navigator 6).

Then when I switched the Go300 on it was recognised by Home1 - although the new map I had bought wasn't listed as being available for download.

However, I updated the Go300 with the available listed free updates, then switched it off.

Downloaded Home 2 again and switched the Go300 on - this time it was recognised by the computer and the new map I had bought was available to download.

So far so good - the only problem was the the postcode search facility was not the same as it had been - I could now only search the first 4 digits of the postcode. There is a fix for this on the tomtom website:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Language=1&query=postcode&FID=9852

which I followed and which worked.

Hope this may be of some use to someone! It took me hours to figure it all out. But it's up and running now.

I read and read and re-read the TomTom website looking for any info that would help but came up with nothing. A few hours later and the air thick with torrents of language I didn’t think I was capable of I discovered that I needed to download Home1 first and let the Go300 connect to the computer via Home1 before it would be recognisable by Home2. Okay…
On the website, though, Home1 is listed as being the version you use if you have TomTom Navigator 6. It’s not even called ‘Home 1′. Confusing eh? Anyway, I downloaded that and from there found that I could get my new map onto my Go300. Once the map and other updates were installed and I had switched the thing off I then found that Home2 recognised it at last.
That had to be one of the most ridiculously long-winded things I’ve had to do on a computer, mainly because TomTom’s confusing advice on their website made the whole process so damn difficult. Perhaps they hoped I’d give up and buy a new one? Tsk.
