Likely it is a low battery issue. Either the rechargeable battery needs to be replaced or the charger isn't working properly. Try replacing the battery with 4 AAs (IIRC) and see if that works.

We have several Motorola radios, two of which came with the rechargeable batteries. In the past year, neither of the rechargeable radios would recharge. The batteries won't make good contact with the charger even when not in the radio. Now one works with AAs but the other lost its settings and we haven't been able to reset to contact the other radios.

Cindy Wells
(we looked into replacing the batteries. Motorola lists chargers and batteries for our older radios but not the two that came with their own chargers. The local battery store wanted ~$40 dollars to try and rebuild the units. Since the chargers are not making good contact, we decided to go with the regular batteries.)

Greetings, I have 4 Motorola Talkabout T5720s bought all the same time about 1.5 years ago. 1 failed after a year - I say failed (did not transmit or receive nothing even though it was on the same...

You did not mention if the display comes on and they look functional, yet do not work. If the radio actually powers up. We will go from the idea the radio powers up and present a few troubleshooting ideas:

1) Clean your battery contacts. Use a pencil eraser and clean the contacts both in the radio and on the battery. If you are using a Motorola rechargeable battery pack, you should also clean the battery contacts on the charger. (Note: rechargeable NiMH and Li-Ion batteries have a 14-18 month life expectancy. Signs of a bad battery include: no or intermittent transmit, the radio shutting off when the PTT is depressed, lots of static when receiving, and/or erratic display.)

2) Set your interference code eliminator (code) back to zero (off), and do the same with your Qt filter if you radio is equipped with one. This will put you back to a very basic operation.

3) Check your VOX or iVOX settings, be certain these are also turned off.

4) Check your accessory jack to see if something is plugged into the hole. Remove any and all accessories to try in a basic form of operation.

5) Moisture is the enemy. Be certain radios are not stored near air conditioners, humidifiers, etc.

If the above items do not solve the problem, you likely will need to retire the units. As for your next venture. If you go with the Motorola TalkAbout line, examine your radios before the one year mark, save the receipt, most have a one year warranty. If you are wanting an all around better radio, look at the Commerical line of radios offered by Motorola, ie. CP110 and BPR40. They would offer a better durability and are designed to do a 40 hour work week.

Best regards.

Frequency range

The T5720 has
- 7 GMRS/FRS 1 watt Channels
- 7 FRS 1/2 watt Channels
- 8 GMRS 1 watt Channels
All of these frequencies are between 462-467 MHz. There is a list of the specific frequencies assigned to each channel on page 19 of the user guide. Here is a link http://www.giantintl.com/RadioPDFs/Outdated%20Manuals/T56XX_57XX_User_Manual_E.pdf

RPL & TPL tones used in T-5720

The T5720 user manual does not list the TPL codes possible in the radio. However, they are the standard list, with zero being "open squelch" (no code). Here is a link to a Motorola manual which has a list of the PL codes in order on page 43. http://www.thekidshuttle.com/ABC%20Docs/CP100_Manual.pdf

On the T5720, another item to what for is the Qt noise filter. Be certain to set it to zero unless using the T5720 with others of the same model. It can also block transmissions. Here is a link to a user manual for the T5720 http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/starbattery/T56XXusersguide.pdf

Talkabout T5720 Frequencies

Hello Ruaal,

The frequencies in the TalkAbout T5720 are not adjustable. The radio operates on the designated Family Radio Service channels located at 462 and 467 MHz. There is no way to change these channels to be at 463 and 464 MHz.

Best regards,
Ken
