Fender PD-250 Microphone

Mic Matching???

By Riddle - usenet poster

What mic will should I use?
Here???s the problem. I have a Fender PD-250 PA that makes me sound like
crap singing through it. To be accurate, it brings out the worst of
the nasal sound that my voice caries. (roughly the same range and
style as james taylor though I don't sound like him. I have a more
midrange strong sound) The EQ sucks on the unit with only one knob
that either boosts lows or highs. (About now comes the question of why
not get another PA- It is because this thing can run off of a car
battery and that is a very cool thing when you want to take it to a
remote island and jam with friends??? and that is the only reason to
keep it)

What mic will have a significant mid cut and upper mid to high bump
and not need phantom power? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Oh, man, you really have problems don't you?  Whe most of us go to
remote islands to jam with friends, we leave our amplifiers at home.
Try it some time.  It's much more relaxing.

It sounds like the PA system is the guilty party here. probably the
speakers more than anything else.  Every tried it with different
speakers?  I suppose I could suggest that you get an RCA 77DX, but I
wouldn't take that out to a remote island for fear of the boat
capsizing.  Why not get a generator or an inverter?  Then you can use
any PA system you choose. Of course you might need a bigger boat.

I can change the speakers. That would be easy but would take away from the
coolness of a suitcase pa. Still if that's the only thing to do I will.

I have tried sm57-58, Senn 421(I usually sound fine with this) and an AKG
d-880. I don't have a lot of dynamic mics to try out.

The speaker cabs are tiny and the speakers are about 8 inches. This model
of pa is the one with the good speakers too.

Uh . . . Danny . . . I was just kidding about the 77DX.  It's a mic
that makes anything sound smooth, but it's also a vintage classic,
hard to find, expensive, and I'd probably want to kill you if I knew
you were putting one to that kind of use.  But what I really meant to
imply was what I said in the rest of the message - the PA system is
just a light duty affair and it's not likely that there will be any
one particular mic that will make you sound really great on it -
unless your present mic is particularly dreadful, in which case just
about any mic will probably make you sound better.  I've heard that
little portable Fender PA system, and it's not that bad.

Have you tried the ever popular Shure SM57 or SM58?  Much safer to
take on a deserted island and much less of a loss if it goes
overboard or gets left out at high tide.

What mikes have you tried?  Pretty much anything I can think of with
the sound you want is going to have too low an output (the Beyer M-500
for instance) to work with the preamps in those things.

I think you are pretty much screwed.  Can you keep the same amp and
replace the speaker system?

No - its really fun... We go out to Powell Cay in the Bahamas or some other
place with no one and hand out for a few weeks and as cool as silence is,
some sound is welcomed, believe me.

I am not familiar with the mic but will check it out. Thanks for the ideas
because I just couldn't think of one. The real PA isn't an option because
it uses to much power. The speakers are attached.. well they come off to
use but it is like a little suitcase. As for the boat, I bought it in LA
and sailed it to Florida so I think it is likely to stay upright for a
while longer (lets hope)

I've heard that

I am just use to the way I sound though a good tri-amped system and am
hoping for too much I guess. Thanks for the help just the same. I might
try some new speakers instead.
