Before I can tell you how to lean your carburetor out, I need to know what kind of carb you have. But, there are other possible causes for your problem. The factory usually jets the original Keihin CV carb too lean to meet EPA emission requirements. The most probable cause is running the enricher too long while warming the engine up. The enricher on any carburetor provides an extremely rich mixture. So rich that it will foul plugs if allowed to run for too long. You should only use the enricher long enough to warm the engine to the point to where you can keep the engine running with the throttle grip. Once the engine will run with the throttle grip, simply idle the engine up and use the throttle grip lock to hold the throttle at this setting and push the enricher knob in. Other causes could be that the needle is not seating properly and allowing the carb to load up with fuel. If this is the case, you should have noticed that the engine is idling extremely rich and poorly. In this case, you'll have to at least drop the float bowl off and replace the needle and check the float setting with the new needle. The Kiehin CV must be positioned on an angle to set the float properly. If you still have reason to think that you need to change your carb's jetting, re-post telling me exactly what carb is on your engine.

Good Luck
Steve

1994 Polaris Indy Sport 440. Why does it run great but rattle? Sometimes it will backfire out of a carb, which I'm assuming is too much fuel.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to a Polaris Snowmobile category.

Rattling is almost certainly the automatic clutch. Backfiring could be due to a few things, and is often lean mixture via the carb rather than rich mixture in the exhaust.

Check the plug electrode. Black means it rich, chalky white means it's lean. The correct colour is a straw hue and no fouling. Backfiring is a well known issue. Check timing as well.

Rattling can be other things as well as listed here

I have a 1994 club car golf cart , backfires , ******* gas , spark plug gets black with what do you think I should do to rectify my problem , thank you , roger

You may have a weak spark or overly rich fuel mixture; your mixture should be 32:1 doing break-in period and then normally 128:1 if you running a richer (more oil) your engine will run lean and be hot thus the spark plug will be dark/black and if running too hot will melt the electrodes or burn a hole in the piston.

My 1998 Honda Shadow ACE 750 backfires alot when i let off the throttle. What causes this?

Sounds like your fuel air mixture is a little rich. Check your plugs, if they are black you are running rich which will cause some of the excess fuel to be burned off in your exhaust. Two common problems with a bikes fuel air mixture is bad plugs, if one does not fire consistently all the time it will leave excess fuel in the combustion chamber. Another would be a clogged air filter keeping the fuel air mixture unbalanced as well.

Lastly if you are able to, you may adjust your air fuel screws on your carb. However most Honda's are stock with Keihin carburetors and these air fuel screws are plugged so you cannot make adjustments without drilling out the plugs.

98 gm blazer has black soot from muffler giving code insufficiant switching o2 sensor bank 1 and 2 any ideas ?

Your Jimmy is running rich, air fuel ratio is not correct. Start with cleaning your MAF sensor, a dirty MAF sensor will cause your engine to run rich or lean, other causes would be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Start with the simple and to common and try cleaning your MAF sensor, you can pick up a can of MAF sensor cleaner at most auto parts store like Auto Zone or Part Source.
Also make sure your engine is running at the proper operation temperature 190", cold running engine will cause the ECM to run your engine rich. Causing the back soot and fouling up your spark plugs and intake ports with carbon.
The ECM was programed to recognize the 4.3 vortec to run at 190" and anything cooler will cause it to run rich and poor on economy.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Wont stay running

the air pump will not change fuel mixture it is used to reduce emissions by adding air to the exhaust to allow the fuel to finish burning
after you replaced all those sensors did you reset the computer (unhook the battery for about 5 min)?

i would pull the plugs clean them, with the plugs out crank it over to clear the cylinders. reinstall the plugs and start it
