Question about GE DBL333EA Electric Dryer

Ohms I need to determine if any of the components in the heating element of my GE electric dryer need replacing. What instrument do I use to test the voltage? And where can I get one for cheap?

Not Drying No Heat


Test for these first:
First of all, see if you have good voltage supply on the socket on which it is powered too.

(1) All venting is clear of lint, even disconnected from back of dryer.

(2) Breaker in house is not tripped. Cycle the breakers off and back on to make sure.

(3) Test continuity on all thermostats and thermal fuses, all have to measure 0 ohms when wires are disonnected and dryer unplugged. We tested the HiLimit Thermostat, Safety Thermostat, and Thermal fuse mounted to the heating element housing, all should have continuity. Also measure the two thermostats located near the exhaust duct in the rear of the dryer, get 0 ohms as well.

(4) Disconnect wires from heating elements. Test continuity from each terminal to the metal cage to make sure none of the elements were grounded. Good if theres no continuity there.

(5) Disconnect wires from heating elements. Test resistance between double coil and inner/outer coil. Each should measure around 19 ohms.

(6) Test the dryer temperature switch by removing wire from terminal 15, then took a reading between terminal 15 and terminal 16, should get 0 ohms there.

(7)Test the dryer timer by first setting the timer to 60 minutes. then remove the wire from terminal A. We then took a reading between terminal A and terminal B, and should get 0 ohms. then keet the leads on those two terminals and rotate the timer and had continuity throughout the 70 minute cycle.

How to check the heating elements in GE harmony dryer


The heating elements are located inside the heater ducts. If you think a heating element is faulty, test it with avolt-ohm-multimeter (VOM)set to the RX1 scale. Disconnect the leads from the power terminals and clip one probe of the VOM to each terminal. The meter should read about 12 ohms. If the reading is higher ohms, the heater is faulty and should be replaced. Replace a faulty heater with a new one of the same type and electrical rating. A heater connected to a 115-volt line usually has an 8.4-ohm resistance; a heater connected to a 220-volt line usually has 11 ohms resistance.

Often a dryer heating element burns out, but doesn't trip the circuit breaker or blow a fuse. The heating element is simply a long coil of special wire. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter. No continuity means the element is bad and you need to replace it--electric heating elements aren't repairable. To determine if the heating element is burned out, you will need to test it for continuity it should read 000 on the meter if good and a 001 or a 1 means bad ok the meter needs to be set at the lowest ohms scale . Thermal fuse On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse--which is about an inch long--is usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing. If the fuse has blown, you need to replace it. (You can't re-set it.) To determine if the thermal fuse has blown out, watch the part testing video at the bottom of this page.

Dryer runs but does not heat.

Check the thermal fuse. The fuse can be tested reading impedance.You can replace the fuse straight away, or you can first test it using a multimeter set on Ohms. If the multimeter reads Ohms infinity when you touch the fuse contacts with the probes, then the fuse is gone. A good fuse will read zero or low impedance.

If the fuse is OK, then you can have a defective thermostat.
In the same way you test the thermostats, thermistors or cutoff located in the heating group, near to fan and element. If they are OK, then they will be conductive at room temperature and will read zero Ohms. If they are bad they read open (infinity). You need to disconnect the part's contact to test properly.

The rest depends if the dryer is electric or gas.


On electric dryers you test the heating element. The heating element is tested in the same way. Set multimeter on impedance, disconnect element, and touch contacts with multimeter probes. If it reads open, then element is gone. A good element reading depends on the specific model. Most washer-dryers, including Whirlpool and Maytag read between 10 and 20 Ohms.


With gas appliances you need to test the ignitor, then coils and then the flame sensor. The ignitor is the most common cause for the problem. Heating coils problems are also common. The flame sensor does not fail very often.

Dryer runs...timer wont rotate and wont heat up


Good day,
Timer woun't run if there is n heat.
1. Check to see you are getting 230 volts to the machine. The motor uses only 115 so is not a good indication.
2. Remove back cover. You will need an ohm meter to test the components.
A. In the center bottom is a skinny white bakelite device held on with one screw. Remove one wire and check. It should check zero ohms. If not replace.
B. On the bottom right is a canister with the heating element terminals sticking out. They should test at 30 or less ohms. If not replace the heating element.
C. There are about 3 other limit thermostats in the area you're working. They should all check at zero ohms. Replace as needed.

It keeps running non-stop but wont heat up


Your temperature thermostat or heater coil is most likely bad, you can test by ohming each. NOTE: The heating circuit should be troubleshot with the dryer UNPLUGGED. Dangerous voltages are still present with the dryer turned off. Resistance readings are as follows:

Heating Element (located inside heater box) – remove the two leads from the ceramic terminals on the heating element and take a reading across the terminal points. It should read 9 - 13 ohms.

Thermal Cut-Out (TCO) (mounted to the heater box.) - unplug wires and take reading across connector tabs. Reading should be 0 ohms.

Hi-Limit Thermostat (mounted to the heater box, closest to the heating element leads) - unplug wires and take reading across connector tabs. Reading should be 0 ohms.

If any of the above readings are abnormal, replace the component. NOTE: If the TCO or Hi-Limit Thermostat is defective it is highly recommended by most manufacturers to replace BOTH components at the same time. They are often sold as a set. Without doing so, these components can cause potentially fail again.

If all of the components are reading ok then you need a timer. Touch your 2 leads together. 0 ohms rght. That means you have a complete circuit.If you get the 0 reading then the element must be otay. Bad timer. Take that fancy meater of yours and atttach one of them leads to the timer leg marked RH. Yank the wire off the terminal beore you test. Move the timer around. You should get the famous 0 reading along the way. If you don't then that means you have the bad timer.

Electric Dryer Heating Element


Hello, yes, 2-3 ohms is kind of low. What I would do is watch the element glow and you should see a solid orange color. Ohms should be around 7. Also, put your hands behind the dryer where you disconnected the vent. You should feel a good amount of pressure. If not, then clean out that tube because it might be clogged. How do I test for bad thermastat or heating element on GE dryer


well the fact that hte heating elemnt is glowing tells me that all the thermstats are working, i would check for a blockage/restriction in the venting. looking at te diag, its possible that only 1 of the 2 coils for the heate are actually going on, check the coils for continuity( may be a small break that separates when gets hot)
