Question about HP (DW017A) Ultrium Tape Drive

1 Answer

HP Ultrium 920 LT03 Drive - All media is 'Write protected'

My LT03 Drive passes all diagnostics but is unable to write to a tape as they are always sensed as being write protected. tried various brands of tape and even LT02 tapes but all are seen as write protected. Front mounted protect tag on tape doesnt change the situation so I think that the mechanism inside isnt capable of detecting the status of the tape.
The tape has been opened to remove a stuck cartridge so warranty is gone and I've been qoted £300-£500 to fix; Seems a lot for what appears to be a mechanical fault. Any suggestions or is there a technical manual anywhere for this drive? Thanks for yr suggestions.

SCSI Connection via 39160 adaptec card.

Wouldnt mind if writeability was always enabled if this could be set somehow.. D22 firmware installed and uptodate.

I took the drive apart and soldered the front two connections to the write enable switch together by dropping a small blob of solder across them. the unit now works fine but all tapes are available to be written to, even ones you might want to keep. Just need to be more careful, and software always prompts for overwrite... Still cheaper than the £300 quote.

It sounds like you have broken the write protect lever (that senses the WP tape switch position ) when you removed the tape.

This is a common problem when people lever out the tape without knowing that this lever helping is holding the tape in the drive.

Yes it will need to go away for a repair i am afraid

Try www.tape-drive-repair.com for this. They charge £295 for the repair (so at the lower end of your quoted prices) but they do then offer a 1 years warranty on the drive so you should be OK for some time to come.

Testimonial: "Correct, the lever had been broken, but more importantly the switch on the board had been damaged. By soldering across the switch it is now always on"

You can open the housing, and remove the drive. Then open the drive, and use air under pressure to remove dust. Be careful, because if you don't know how the mechanism works, it could be the drive will not take in a tape at all.
I do have a IBM manual, where they show how to open the thing, but it is not easy. The ultrium LTO full high drives are all the same.
And I don't know how to get it with you.

No Compatible media found in HP Tape Drive

Try a brand new tape fresh out the wrapper.

If that doesnt work make sure you are using the right drive in your backup software!

It sounds like a message often seen in windows backup where you have selected the wrong tape drive from the list and it just tells you "No compatible media found" when actually the drive listed isnt even connected to your system still

I HAVE A ULTRIUM TAPE DRIVE 920 IT ALWAYS ASK ME TO OVERWRITE THE TAPE BUT THE TAPE IS NOT YET FULL WHEN IT REACH THE CAPCITY OF 300GB, IT ASK ME TO OVERWRITE THE TAPE???? CAN YOU HELP WITH MY PROBLEM

it asking you to overwrite because that is how you set up the backup job. Setup a new backup job using append instead of normal backup and the message will go away. Its not problem its a feature to prevent you from overwriting data.
