I just picked up a Zenith Solid State stereophonic portable turntable. When I turn it on it makes a humming sound. How can I fix it? The model number is NPS40. Thanks, Karen

This is a common problem for older audio equipment. It is caused by old capacitors drying out / changing values / shorting internally.

This problem can be minimized and even eliminated by a process called "forming". Forming is done by gradually applying the voltage to the device over time. You would need a piece of special equipment called an variable isolation to do this. You start at 0 volts and over the course of a day (or more) - gradually increase to 120 volts. Simply plugging the device into a 120 volt outlet defeats the forming process and once done - is irreversible - if the capacitors were the cause of the problem. The only thing left to do is to replace the capacitors; which restores the sound - but not the value of this vintage piece with new components (if that was your goal). Some technicians will install new capacitors inside the old ones to make it appear as original. You'll probably need to have this checked out by a pro.

Good luck!

Model number on Zenith Solid State Stereo Phonograph

The label has likely been removed or come off, most of those had it on the rear or bottom with a few inside where the phono is.

Hiya, check and be sure the turntable is plugged into correct inputs, "phono"

If thats OK, then probably is the stylus but could also be the cartridge itself. Check the wires on the back of cartridge make sure they are fixed properly. If all Ok, then start with a new stylus first.

Hope it helps
