It means the picture is protected so no one can accidently delete it-someone protected it and you can usuallly go into playback menu and unlock it

I have a picture of a padlock in my viewfinder. What does it mean. Should I get rid of it? If so, how?

Hi Brian, the padlock icon signifies a function is locked - eg. auto focus or something similar. You need to read the manual to find out what it really represents. Removing it will depend on your preference but first find out.

Coolpix Nikon, how do I get rid of the arrow at left side of screen, it prints on pictures, did not occur originally.

Do you mean, it is on the pictures when you print them on paper?
Because when you select a Favourites Album you can chose an icon that goes with that album. The down pointing arrow is one of the icons. If that is the case, just deselect the favourites album. Just check the favourite pictures mode on page 7 e.v. from the manual.

The lens won't open or close; the screen says "Lens error".

This generally means that there is something in the way of the gears in the lens or they are just stuck. Simply pick up the camera like you are going to take a picture, hold onto it with only your right hand and then smack the bottom of the camera on the palm of your other hand. This should free up the lens and get rid of the error. Let me know how it works out and if you need anything else.

What does 'Write Protect' mean and how do I get rid of it?

That means that your SD card (or whichever memory card you use) is write protected and you cannot edit the card's content in any way.

Take your memory card out of the camera and plug it into your computer. There should be a place for you to change the memory card's protections that way. Sometimes, as with USB drives, there might be a small sliding lock physically located on the card which will also write protect the device.
