Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Open Question

JVM 1443wk02 Won't let me change power level; turntable is very slow

I was cooking in my GE Spacemaker the other day (water... several batches) and the power went out. It was not the house breaker so I unplugged the microwave for a while and the power came back on. Now the turntable and power level seems like they are on low. But now the microwave won't let me change the power level. When I hit the Power Level button it says: "Power Level may not be changed at this time". There is still power and it still heats up food, I just have an intuition that the power level is on low, so I'd like to see the level and it won't let me see it or change it.

Thanky you.

I left it unplug all of Saturday. Plugged it in today.

I'm not sure I described exactly the problem correctly. The turntable moves very slow now, there is power, I am able to cook but it seems 'slow'...

I tried to reset the Power Level without first pressing the Cook Time button. I think I can only change the Power Level when I press the Cook Time first. When I did this, the Power Level was changed. It appears the Power Level is set at 10. But the Microwave just doesnt' seem like its rotating at the same speed as it used to and the microwave sounds like it is running on low power. I read other post about a fuse. Can you tell me if this might be the problem? And if so, where I can find it on the microwave?

    Thank you!

I would unplug it again for a minute or so to reset it again.

Let us know if that works.

Mmmm it's so easy,
First disconect the power, take the cover off, moslitly there would be 5 screws and two tab's on the top.
inside on the right hand side the magnetron it's a sylver box measuring about 4 in x 4 in x 5 in. It will have a plasic cover moslitly that would have to be remove first then on the magnetron there is 4 crews and one connector.
It should fall downard after.
If you have a power supply after the secondary , that may also be your problem.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Chances are you have a bad door switch or loose door switch mount.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

I'm guessing that's JVM1870SDF04. While there's a chance it may be the magnetron, but I do suspect the high voltage transformer.

The magnetron would still be covered under warranty, but you would have to pay for the home visit ($75 avg) and the labor to replace the part ($90 avg).

The transformer is just over $100 here and about $165 direct from GE.

You can save about $75 in labor by taking it to the shop yourself and for their bench fee, you can get an estimate and find out if it;s the mag or the transformer.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

GE Customer Service is here and they can point you to your nearest GE-authorized servicer.

You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.

SOURCE: Turntable and cooking power not working, everything else does.

You have a shorting membrane keypad.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for a free estimate and free tips & do-it-yourself advice.

SOURCE: My GE spacemaker model JVM1630BB doesn't heat up

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

Listen to that and compare it to yours.

If it sounds much quieter than usual, I would suspect the top door switch (called the secondary interlock switch) or its mount. See this file.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If it sounds louder than usual, you may have a shorted high voltage diode or a bad magnetron.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) G.E. will send you a new magnetron to install yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

There should be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

At
our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You should be able to check out and replace the door switch by removing the controller without taking the oven down from the wall.

But to access and replace the other parts, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here if you want.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here. I recommend that you bookmark that link to your favorites.

GE Spacemaker Microwave JVM 1542WF 002 : everything works except the turntable and it won't heat. Have tried the TT on/off nothing happens. Have tried the power setting...nothing happens.

Usually, power for the turntable motor and the magnetron tube (the microwave source) are controlled by a couple of things. One is a relay on the control circuit board, and the other is a switch that's operated by one of the door latches. It's possible the control board has gone bad or bad connections have developed. It's also possible the door switch has failed or is out of adjustment and the oven thinks the door isn't closed.

Diagnosing this kind of trouble may require working on the oven while it's operating. MICROWAVE OVENS USE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES WHICH CAN KILL YOU. You might want to leave the repair to a professional because of safety concerns. Unless the circuit board requires replacement, it's probably worth having this repaired. Unlike some repairs, this one won't cost as much as a new oven.
