Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

Dell dimension 4600

My dell won't boot. The bios tells me it can't find the hard drive. I installed new hard drive, changed the cables, cmos battery. If I try to reload the OS it will start to load then just shut down. What do you think?

hi, I have it set on auto detect already no luck. I thought it was strange that it would just shut off during the install. Could it be a power supply issue?

Check in the bios that it is your new hardrive it is seeing, and not your old one still sitting in thr bios memory, as taking out the battery doesnt always delete the cmos memory.

There shoul be an option in the bios to auto recognise the drive

it sounds that you have problem in the mother board, you can hooked up your drive to other pc as slave just to ensure if it will read. if ok, then their is no problem in your hard drive also with other drive.

I'm trying to install WD Caviar Green 1TB in my Dell Dimension 4600. It appears as though the exhisting hard drive used a SATA connection w/molex power connection. I have tried downloading the WC...

I BELIEVE THAT WD PROVIDES A CD WITH "WD DATA LIFEGUARD UTILITIES." IF YOU USE THAT DISK AND SELECT "DRIVE TO DRIVE COPY" SELECTION. THIS SHOULD CREATE A CLONE OF YOUR ORIGIONAL DISK. SELECT THE NEW DRIVE TO BOOT FROM EITHER IN BIOS SETTINGS OR FROM THE BOOT SELECT "F12" OPTION.
THE PC SHOULD BOOT FROM THE NEW DRIVE IF SELECTED

Hard drive continue to clicks, message to hit F2 to configure.

If you have a clicking hard drive and the system gives a F2 to continue but will not boot, most likely you have a hard drive failure.
Boot to the BIOS (F2 at boot) reset the defaults and save, see if anything changes.
Most likely, you will be replacing the drive

My dell dimension 4600 will not boot from cd drive first

Go back to the Dell BIOS screen and change all setting back to the default settings. Put in a Bootable CD and press F12, this will give you boot menu. Then you can boot to any device that you need to.

Can't reboot windows cd on with cd drives

If you have it available, boot to the Dell DImension Resource CD and run the diagnostics on the hard drive. From the description of you problem, you may have a failing hard drive.

Other things to check:

1. Ensure the system BIOS (F2 at boot) sees the hard drive and has the correct date and time. If the motherboard battery is failing, the time and date will not be retained when system is powered off.

2. If you are able to format the hard drive, but the windows XP installation process gives you file copy errors, then you may have a bad RAM module. If the system has 2 or more modules, take out all but 1, retry the install. If you get file copy errors again, try a different module.

3. If the Hard drive passes dieagnostics, but fails to complete a format, replace the hard drive.

Boot up

Maybe your CMOS battery is low on power. Have it replaced with a new/good one.
Hope it works for you.
