Question about LG 24 in. LD-12BW5 Free-standing Dishwasher
Our LG dishwasher is about 3 years old. Some of the dishes on the bottom rack are not cleaning. Especially pots or pans. I have cleaned all the filters and spray arm. I have just noticed that the bottom spray arm is not spinning. I moved it to a position prior to washing. Once cycle complete the spray are is in exactly the same position. Is this able to be repaired and how?
Hi, I have had a similar problem and have found that the motor that controls the flow direction to either the upper or lower arm has seized due to small but prolonged water ingress over many years. Pull off the lower spin arm and run some water through it to prove it is not blocked. Next remove the filter and plate in the base of the dishwasher and remove the four Phillips head screws to move the ducting that feeds the water to the upper spin arm. Now you should be able to see a small semicircular plastic piece that channels the water to either the top or bottom spin arm. Look carefully at the position of the director and decide if it is in the right position to direct water to either of the spin arms, use this knowledge to help you decide if it is working okay. If you can select upper or lower cycles try them and check if the director moves to the right place. This is a good time to check the pump pressure. Run the machine, without rebuilding the insides, open the door during the cycle and you should find plenty of water splashing around and you can also check the director position.
Okay, assuming that the director is not moving it is likely that the little drive motor has had it. There is also a little micro switch beside the motor which may have failed but I believe that a siezed motor is most likely. Replacement motors are available for about $50.
Access to the motor is not for the faint hearted, it requires substantial disassembly but only a phillips head screwdriver is required to get it done. You will just have to follow your nose to pull it apart as it is a little too involved to describe what to do.

Tips for a great answer:

Load the appliance with dirty dishes, placing soiled pots and pans on the lower rack where they will be subjected to the most vigorous cleaning. Glassware and dishwasher-safe plastics should go on the top rack. It is not necessary to rinse dishes before loading them in the Hotpoint appliance, unless the dishes have been sitting for awhile and the food particles have dried.
Fill the detergent compartment with your preferred brand of dishwashing detergent, and add glass rinse solution to the rinse reservoir on the inside of the door if your model is equipped with one, then close the door to lock in place.
Select the cycle you wish to use and press the button. For pots and pans, use the heavy-duty cycle. Normal wash is fine for dishes and utensils.
Save on your energy bill by running the dishwasher only when it is full and by allowing the dishes to air dry instead of using the heat dry function on the appliance.
