Question about RCA D52130 52" Rear Projection Television

7 Answers

TV turns self off during watching, also has darkened picture.

Hello,

I was recently given an older D52130 with a problem. During any use, the TV turns off after 20 - 30 mins and won't come back on for about 20 - 30 mins. When I try to turn the TV on during this period, it makes a click sound. After it's presumably cooled down, it will work again for another 20 - 30 mins.

Additionally, the picture looks darkened compared to what I would expect it to be. I read about a 27k resistor I should replace but haven't yet gotten that done. I am definitely considering opening it up and vacuuming out the components to get rid of dust. Are there any components I should avoid with the vacuum?

Lastly, I don't have the manual for this TV and would like to get a pdf copy somewhere. I checked RCA's website but couldn't find anything for this model. Anybody got a url?

I vacuumed the TV components last nite and when I turned it on, the TV ran for 3 hours before shutting itself off again. This morning, another 30 mins and now it won't turn on anymore. I hear 4 clicks and see the power light flash 4 times but the lamps never kick on.

Please help, if anyone knows of a solution to this problem, would you kindly share?!

    Thanks,

    SlaeYer

Maanita, I should have clarified earlier, this was done many times by the previous owner as well as myself yet it's not something a reset will repair.

I'm electronically savvy, and know how to solder on PCBs, if needed to replace components. Additionally, I've got a multi-meter and I know how to use it if anybody could give me an idea of what values to look for.

Google searches yield no helpful results, this is driving me insane!!

    Thank you

This TV was unplugged for 2 years. I did try your suggestion anyway, but no change. Please help.

Hi,
In case you are comfortable with the internals for the TV , try checking the board on the following points

Check the secondary of T14600
Also check for short circuits on CR14611, CR14609, CR14608, CR14607, or CR14602. Q14601(G) Q14601(D)
Do static checks around the soft start circuit
There could be a probelm on the R14618 a 680K 1/2 watt resistor.

Thanks

The protection system on the RCA sets hides the clues to a tech such that the only way to get at the section that is causing the trouble is to defeat the protection circuit and start taking measurements of the many sections within the tv. Sometimes it is obvious and sometimes requires deep investigation.

Common failures inlude loss of high voltage, horizontal output circuit breakdowns, power supply failures and convergence IC burnouts. In all cases the repairs will run from about $200 on the low side to $400 on the high side

Replacing a faulty IC will fix it. Normally, that kind of problem is leads to a shorted power supply chip. Check on the manual where the power supply chip is and double check if it's been burned. In addition, check any bloated capacitor and resistor. Just replace those if you found one. Vacuuming the tv wont help, you need to thoroughly search for broken/burned components.

When you vaccum the dust out you have to remember that static electricity is harmful to the circuit boards it doesn't take very much to short a circuit. it seems that the unit is overheating and inorder to find the part you have to have the tv on and feel which solid state part is very hot.

if they are for some reason the heat won't dissapate and the tv will go in self protect mode. chances are *********** board has a chip or 2 that is causing this i don't know the value of the chips you have. but it seems that replacement of the chip/s or board it's self is required.

Do a hard reset to the unit, unplug the unit for at least 2 hrs and then turn it back on it should work fine.

Tv turns off by it self

Ours 60" (60P8342) turns off after a short period of time also. My husband researched it online. The cheap solution he was told to try is to unplug the TV (or plug into power strip and switch off) when you are done watching it. A computer board inside over heats and it's a protection mechanism for it to turn off. Otherwise, it's over $100 to fix the computer board.
