Question about Washing Machines
You may have overloaded the washer and the belt drive system could not handle that excess mass.. The smoke and burning smell is a belt melting while trying to rotate the drum.. I would unload it .. gain access to the drive mechanism ( probably via an access panel in the back but may not be.. - brand and model specific).. and then check for damage to the drive belt.. You may look at the pulley system and look for burnt black from melted belt on it.. You could also have a clog in your pump that the belt drives but can't ( because of that clog) and therefore the belt rubs over the pump pulley and melts.. Could be any one of those things..
