Question about Toshiba SD-K850

Toshiba SD-K850 does not open

My player can power up & the display works. When the open/close button is pushed, the system recognizes and displays the word "OPE", but the DVD tray does not come out. Then the machine tries to register the empty tray and displays "NODISK". Would appreciate any fixit solution before we add this to the recycle junkyard. Thanks.

Unplug the unit for 10 minutes, then plug it in and try again. I just had the same problem after our main power went off and on a few times (during a storm). If that didn't work and you don't plan on servicing it, before you "recycle" it, unplug it & drop it from about 3 to 4 inches from the "carpet". It may just have some crude stopping up the mechanism. Continue to increase the height of the drop untill you REALLY do have to recycle it :)

The plugging and unplugging didn't work for me, so I removed the cover from the unit (3 screws in back, 1 on each side) and then removed the DVD drawer assembly (four screws, with access to two covered by foam rubber strips on top of the drive assembly). I didn't bother unplugging the cables though. With the unit unplugged, I moved the eject lever (white plastic, on the underside of drive assembly, toward the front) to open the drawer. I removed the drive "belt" (actually a black rubber band) and cleaned it with rubbing alcohol. With a Q-Tip I added a bit of white lithium grease to the straight tray gear as well as to the round, white nylon drive gears. Finally, with a Q-Tip I added some spray silicone to the sliding contact areas. Worked fine after that, but I did test everything before reassembling!

Toshiba SD-K850 trouble

I contact Toshiba Service and they suggest to unplugg AC cord then wait for 3 minutes but this is not a real solution ("Bad" message). I already notice other Toshiba models have the same problems (SD-K750 & SD-3980), and they are replaced them because of component part failure. (my DVD is a SD-K850).
They also explain that if that process not work, I must call their
Service Dept. for more details, same phone # (1-800-631-3811).
Luck!
