This is most likely a video graphics failure (just like the lines that you saw when computer is still running). For some dell computers, specially a laptop, the graphics card is built in to the motherboard. For the computer that blinks for a few seconds and turning itself off, the computer is no longer performing it's POST (Power on self test). If the computer is under warranty, try contacting Dell or if not, try contacting a local technician to have the motherboard replaced.

Have a black screen on dell 1521

try taking the battery out, pull out the power cord, and push and hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds. Then put everything back and try to start normally. If the problem still continues, try turning it off and pulling the memory out of the laptop and then reseat it...sometimes this may cause the problem but without any sorts of beeping or display occurring, it's very hard to help you on this one. I'm wishing you the best though. :-)

This evening, my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop started making noise from the cooling fan area. What does this mean? Does it need to be replaced?

It could. First thing you should do though is clean the fans out with some compressed air.

Make sure the laptop is off and you're outside. I usually use two cans at once for best results. If you still get weird noises especially screeching then the bearings are going out and you can either grease up the old fan (band-aid fix) or swap it out with a new one.

Hope this info helps and best of luck!

My Dell Inspiron 1521 has had a battery problem for a couple of weeks but just taking the battery out and only using the adapter worked just fine. One night the computer shut itself down twice. The next...

Hi,
Try running the diagnostics on the computer. You may need to repeat some of the steps that you have already done to initiate the same.

1. Remove the battery and the Ac adapter from the system
2. Press the power button for 10 seconds
3. Reinsert the battery and connect the Ac adapter
4. While holding down the FN key on the keyboard press the power button.

If the system beeps in a series on 3-3-3 or 3-3-4 the system is ok and there could be a problem with the screen.

If the system beeps in some other code . revert to the post and we would let you know where the problem is .

My Dell 1521 was working perfectly until this morning. When I tried starting it later today, the LCD screen no longer worked. The top third of the screen is fine. The bottom two thirds are covered by lines...

Your LCD has either gone bad or the ribbon needs to be reseated.

Carefully pry the plastic cover that runs parallel with your LCD. You will see the ribbon to the monitor. Press the connector down and make sure it didn't come loose.

Restart Windows.

If that doesn't work, then you will need to replace the LCD screen. You will not have to replace your lid...just the LCD. That should save you some money.

Hope this helps.

My dell inspiron 1521 screen goes black!

Yes, most likely the inverter has failed if you can still make out the desktop but the screen is very dim. Below is the link to the service and repair manual for that model.

Inspiron 1521 is running hot

I recommend you check your air vents for dust buildup. Use an old toothbrush to clean the dust off the outside of the vents and then use one of those cans of compressed air meant for cleaning keyboards to blow air through the vents to dislodge any dust accumulated inside. Some laptops have more than one vent. Make sure to clean all of them. I once worked on a Sony laptop that I had to take apart to clean out all of the vents.

Screen goes blank when on battery power

Two possibilities: The display is a power hog. It's possible that the battery is failing, and has enough power to run the PC, but not the PC AND display at the same time. You would need to replace the battery, in this case. Or, in Control Panel, in Performance and Maintenance, in Power Options, there should be settings somewhere for the display when on battery or AC power. Make sure that the one for Battery doesn';t turn the display off after 0 minutes.
