Question about LG 42LC2D 42 in. LCD HDTV

Signal intermittenly drops (no signal), or is extremely weak

Is there any thing I can do to help my elderly parents (with their LG HDTV). Problem: The TV was not a good choice of purchase but my 80 something parents went and bought it without talking to my sisters and I regarding brands. The TV had problems within the first 30 days as the digital receiver was bad and had to be replaced. That was some real drama getting the vendor (the TV-Audio store) to get in touch with the independant repair person for LG. FINALLY the man came (nearly 3+ weeks of continual contact with the vendor) and fixed the set. Then within the next few weeks the signal problem began and is increasing growing worse. The independant repair man said the trees that line the property (along the side of their house where the TV resides) could be creating signal trouble when the wind blows. However this problem is happening even when the wind is NOT blowing! Can I do sometype of a firmware update or run some troubleshooting program from my laptop to their TV? They do not have Internet access nor do they have Cable TV or Direct Satelite TV.

Wondering if you can recommend anything of assistance here.

    My LG 37LC4 37 in. HDTV LCD has worked fine for ten months or so, but then started to get no picture and a 'weak signal' message on loads of digital channels. Auto tuning now only finds 17 tv channels instead of 80 or so. Even more confusing, the channels it does find have really good signals (as high as 100%) indicating there might be a transmitter problem affecting certain channels. EXCEPT that the other LCD TV in the next room, working off the same aerial and signal booster, still picks up all 80- channels.

    I've checked the aerial in the loft which is quite new and hasn't moved since it was installed and set up. I've checked the coax cables and (i) swapped the tv to aerial socket cable, and (ii) remade the connections in the wall socket to signal booster cable... so I'm beginning to think it might be a problem with the TV.

    Is it possible that a software/hardware problem could allow some channels to be recieved perfectly and others not at all?

You could consider buying an External antenna. But do have a professional to come out and install it or follow the manuals instructions exactly and dont replace or substitute any parts. otherwise improper grounding will damage the TV.

Pixellation on most channels

The pixellation on cable channels usually indicating poor/weak cable signal. You may want to have the cable signal strength check out by the cable company, check your cable connection at the entrance of the house to make sure they are clean and tight, try connect and disconnecting them. You are not the cable company cable box are you? My had to be replaced twice by Comcast, they were running very hot.

Half the tv screen goes black randomly,then returns to normal

The Tuner signal board have problems.The board CPU,Chip,have intermitten short.When the chip is completely dead.The tv will get only LED light indicator power only,will not get tv signal pictures.

Most of the channels breaking up despite auto retuning

could be one of a few things,
low signal strength, aerial out of line with transmitter.
bad coax connections losing signal strength.
coax broken inside, or old and not low loss.
Get the aerial checked for direction, half a degree out of line over a few miles and you will lose a lot of signal strength, as will old coax (aerial cable) and if you are using an unshielded coax you could be losing signal strength through the cable itself. Replace the connecters and try to use a straight run of cable instead of having joins in it as these joins, even if using connecters, will cause a weak signal. If yiu are running more than one tv off your aerial, invest in a booster.

Some models are just that way. I would invest in a small surround sound system for them.

sounds like a weak signal or some electrical item interfering with the digital signal .check the aerial conections .farr64

if you can bring up a menu and change sources to alternate signal and video is present then tv is fine but if you are unable to bring up menu and no video from any source then problem is most likely going to be with the small signal board

If you reside in the USA, go to this website and type your address. The site will give you recommendation on the best antenna and placement location based on your address. Works like a charm believe me.
If you live in another country, HDTV over the air programming may not be available in your country. Your best bet to get a good signal (may still not be in HD) is cable or satellite dish. Best Regards
