316 m reg, ran out fo fuel put some petrol in and now it will not start don't think the fuel pump is working is there a reset for the pump

When you ran out did you keep trying to start it? or did you leave anything on while you went to get fuel? hazard lights etc...
it sounds light your battery just ran down. try to jump start it

no reset button u have fuses and relays under hood but turn key to on position not start and listen for hum from fuel pump if no hum check for power to pump [fuses relays] if power is to pump possible fuel pump failure

It sounds like there might be an air lock between the fuel pump and the carburetor. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump at the carburetor. Get a coffee can or another container turn the fuel pump on or try and start the car. the fuel pump will pump fuel through the fuel line to fill it with fuel and push the air out of the line. When you get a steady stream of fuel , reconnect the fuel line to the carburetor, the car should start.

running out of fuel sucks the dirt off the bottom of the tank it might have caused it to fail i think you can get to it from under the back seat you can see if the pump has power there as well

Possible there is air lock and the fuel pump is not delivering the needed pressure nor the fuel for the engine to rev up to the desired level.
You need to remove the fuel line and allow the air lock to clear so that there is free flow to the pump. Check for dirt in fuel or water content if the tank was drained totally. A check on the filter will confirm. clean and reset.

Don't know if this could be it,but check in the trunk for the inertia switch.I think it's in the trunk,anyway.The red button might have popped up and need depressed to reset it to power the fuel pump. don-ohio

I suggest to check fuel pump pressure,also can you hear the fuel pump with the key in on positionyou should be able to hear fuel pump prime the line

Hi Mark try spraying some starting fluid in the intake.You asked about putting petrol in the carburettor...your 1992 Saab has a carburettor? Impossible.That vehicle is fuel injected.Spray the starting fluid lightly or you'll flood the engine.

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE FUEL LINES WHERE THE FUEL PRIMING PUMP IS CONNECTED FOR ANY CHAFFING THEY ARE COMMON FOR CHAFFING BESIDE THE FUEL FILTER WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY FUEL IS RETURNING TO FUEL TANK.

Not a problem, the fuel pump is in the rear passenger side (under the back seat) pop out the seat held by too clips onto the the rear seat, take out the sound deadining pad, undo the big black cover and get water pump pliers too undo the white cover lift out the pump, you should check the fuel gauge to see how much fuel is in the tank, no need to drain as long as you dont want petrol on your hands.
When you take the pump out, the most common problem is the thin Brown wire snaps off the sender unit, it buzzes but wont start. It should be around £30 for a good second hand pump.
