Before beginning, review electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions. Disconnect the power adapter, the modem and network cables, and remove the battery before removing the hard drive bay cover. Remove the RAM door whichi s secured by one screw. Now loosen the two hard drive screws and pull the DVD/CD-RW drive from the laptop. Replace the cover before restoring power or reconnecting the modem and network cables.

Why won't my Gateway PC DVD drive close?

Are all the Windows and Gateway updates and Hotfixes in? Look for a DVD rom fix on the Gateway website support. If there is no disk in the drive and it opens, you may want to replace it. You can try a work-around, I have no idea if it will solve the problem, but at boot open the BIOS, go to Boot sequence, Change HDD to boot first. DVD/CDrom 2nd or 3rd.

My cdrom drive worked 2 months ago and now it doesn't whats wrong?

I would try uninstalling it, rebooting, and let windows try to install it again.... Right Click My Computer, go to properties Then select Device Manager Under CD Rom Devices, right click your CDROM and uninstall. Reboot If windows picks it up, loads drivers, you should be back in business. If this does not help the situation, the drive is bad. They do not last forever, and that is an old machine.

Replaced hard drive and am getting a "Reboot and

Hi seqhdha,

The reason why you're receiving that meesage is the system is not detecting any bootable device on the computer or it is boot from a media that is not bootable (CD/DVD/USB). To fix this problem if you already installed the Operating System you can change boot priority setting and select the Hard Drive as the First Boot Device however, if you havent install the Operating System you need to select the CDROM as the First Boot Device and insert the Windows Installer.

Here are the steps on how to access the BIOS Page.

1. Restart the computer and while it is booting tap DELETE button.

2. On the Bios page look for the BOOT tab then set the priority to either Hard Disk or CDROM depends if you already installed the OS or not.

3. Follow the instruction on how to install the Operating System

4. Rate me if this helps so i can help others.

Thanls for using Fixya.

CD Rom Drive door closes when the button is pushed, but then within 5 seconds opens again. It just will not stay closed, but I couldn't see that there is anything obstructing it when I used a flashlight...

Inside the computer chass, if you can see the CDROM is connected to the same data cable as that of an hard drive or something, you might like to remove the CDROM to another data cable or make sure the jumper of the CDROM is set to master. That may fix it.
If you remember a software downloaded about coffee cup holder, there might be a virus issue on your computer. A virus scan may help.

Can't copy dvd or cd , the cd rom drive would not recognize any cd's

it's possible that the CDROM drive is bad. Since it's an IDE device, it would be easy to replace. Simply get another DVD-RW device (might as well upgrade!) and open the case. Needless to say, you want the machine off for this process.

Open the case, disconnect the power and data cables from the back of the CDROM. Unscrew the holding screws and slide out the drive. Replace the drive with the DVD-RW, line it up and replace the screws. Then connect the data and power cables...be careful with the data cable to make sure that you don't "miss" a row of pins.

Put the case back together and turn on the machine. XP should automatically recognize the drive.

Rather than paying a computer technician at least $25 to spend 30 minutes trying to fix the problem, spend $40 to buy a new CD/DVD-writer, to replace this non-functioning drive.

Bad motherboard or power supply which fries motherboard

Gateway hasn't had any recalls on it that I know of. maybe it is not the mother board. It might be the hard drive. Hard drives can do that aswell. When I fix a computer the first thing I check is the hard drive. A little bit of advice with computers. Start with the small things first and work Your way up to the big stuff. Hope that helps.

Alienware Aurora CDROM and Hard Drive Issues

Some SATA/RAID controllers require you to install the drivers during the setup of Windows. Otherwise, you'll get the message you received. Download the drivers and put them onto a floppy disk for use during setup and at the start of the Windows setup, you will be prompted to press F6 to install these drivers. If you don't have a floppy drive, don't worry. You can slipstream the drivers into a setup disc that you can create. To do so, follow the methods here:
