A couple of things to check and info we need to assist further:

1) When the set shuts down, is ther eany indication on the front such as a blinking standby or power light?

2) When you replaced the lamp, were all of the access doors closed completely?

3) Have you tried reseating the lamp. If the lamp is not entirely in the socket, it will still work for a while. The burnt smell may be because of arcing.

4) Is the area around the air intake for the fan clear?

The set is going into shutdown because a problem has been detected. When the problem clears up, the set will fire up again. This type of cyclic behavior suggests that the problem is heat related. With the set unplugged, try turning the fan by hand. It should move freely. If not, then clean the area using a vacuum or compressed air and try again.

This could also be the beginning of the failure of the "ballast". This is the part that "fires" the lamp. This is similar in concept to the ballast present in flourescent lights.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Try first removing the lamp and putting it back in place, to test if it is a lamp connection problem.
If you still get the problem lamp is overheating and must be replaced, here is a seller

from your TV manufacturer (so that you get a warranty for the bulb) or their recommended bulb merchandiser

need to add - before shopping for a new lamp/bulb - exert an effort to try that replacement lamp you purchased on another TV (to get an exact answer to whether it is the lamp or the TV is malfunctioning).

Please turn off your TV for about 3 hours, please unplug the power cable. That will reset it back to normal.

TV turns on screen comes up just fine but won't stay on. What does the power button blinking twice and the OPC button blinking 3 times mean?

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

RCA61DLP42 rear projection TV displays dim picture for 30 sec with no audio. Then screen goes dark and power light blinks three times. It usually tries to start up again, with the same sequence of events...

3 blinks indicates a failure in the inverter / ballast board. Since you have replaced it it means that the power source board, the one that power the inverter, is faulty and it will have to be replaced.

The tv was working fine. Pressing the button to turn it on only turns it on briefly (sound but no picture) then it turns off. The standby/timer light blinks six times repeatedly.

I had a similar problem. I had a 52" RCArear projection tv. It would do this when I initially turned on the television, but then after a few "on/off, on/off, on/off" cycles it would stay on. Eventually it started doing it more; until finally there was a spark and that was it. The tv was dead. The bloggers called it "the blinking green light of death" (because of green light on the panel). The power board is going out.ALSO holding down the Input and Menu buttons afterward will give you some diagnostic information via 2 sets of blinking indicator lights.

You may very well have issues with capacitors on this set being that it is or very similar to the V26 chassis. Since I have spare test lamps laying around, I would normally try that first. If the lamp still would not stay lit, I would then suspect the electrical chassis (capacitors). When I suspect the chassis, I can usually verify it by pulling it out and partially disassemble it and find blown capacitors

Screen goes black, 5 blinking red lights, screen back on for 20 seconds....cycle continues

Let me first say that if you are getting 5 blinks its not the thermal fuse. Your problem is your Lamp. You have what we call an intermittent Lamp. The only way to fix this is to replace the lamp. Part Number A-1085-337-A. Average cost $217.00

How many times per second does the POWER led blink? (dont worry about the OPC).

1x per second (constant, steady blink) = bad inverter/lamps
2x per second = bad power supply
3x per second = bad main board

You can buy the parts online and fix if yourself!!

Very faint picture- no sound

If the red lamp light is blinking the lamp is probably shot. The pricing of the lamp varies from $200 and up plus installation. Or you can buy the lamp and install yourself. See the owners manual on instructions to replace the lamp.
