Check the drain where the wash machine is plumbed into it should have the blung to stop the smell comming out of the drain, also check the filter but it is very rare that the smell will come out of the washer it will be a drain issue that is backing up through the washer,if you havent got a u bend trap on the drain it will allow the drain gases to come back into the house.
hope that helps a little bit.

The washer drain should have a P-Trap, but it may be on the downside of the vent stack for the washer -- who knows. Sounds like the draft is colder air coming down the vent stack and out the drain pipe. Could do something as simple as stuff a rag around the wahser drain hose.

P.S. I believe the code for a washer drain line has been changed to require a 3" pipe -- this is due to the suds pressure zone phenomenon.
Looking forward to reading about how the garden hose solution pans out.
The problem is either your pump or your hoses. This should be an easy fix. All you need is a screwdriver and a bucket to catch water. 1st unplug the machine and remove the drain hose from the drain. Then try to drain the water from the washer by plugging it back in and setting the washer to drain. if no water comes out of your drain hose then you know your plumbing is ok. Next put the drain hose back in the drain and take the cabinet off your washer. You will see your pump with 2 hoses connecting to it. One hose connects to the basket and the other to the drain. Disconnect the hose coming from the basket and if water comes out then you know the basket is not blocked with any article of clothing. If both check out ok your problem would be the pump. Write down the model and serial number to your washer and buy a pump. They are only about $15.00. Remove the old and install the new. Having a repairman install would cost about 150.00, so i advise you to do it yourself or have a friend help
you could have a bad drain pump.
have you checked the hoses that come from the bottom of the tub to the drain pump for anything that might be stuck in there, also check the hose that comes off the drain pump to the wall and look for an obstruction.

Your problem is water siphoning because of the drain pipe too low or no air gap where the drain enters the wall. The drain hose from the washer should be at least 33 inches high.
that washer has had alot of problems with the drain pump if yours has not been replaced with the new style pump motor it needs to be done. that the problem.
more than likely that it is blocked pull the washer clear so you can see the back get your outlet hose and place into a bucket and see if the water comes out if it doesnt than pump/pipe blocked better off taking washer outside because when you release the outlet pipe from your pump thert will be alot of water that will come out if it comes out of the pump than your pipe will be blocked m8
