I had this problem and I contacted Garmin. It is due to the WAAS. You can do one of two things: 1) Purchase thier over priced cables so you can attach the unit to your PC and downlowd the updates, or 2) Turn it on, hit menu, disable WAAS. Now it works.
I had the same problem so I replaced my 152 with a spare unit. It did the same thing. This led to believe it was the cable. I removed a few kinks and a bend at the unit; and it seems to be fine. Seems too simple and the bends were not that severe, but it is working (for now).

Yes, this is caused by a defective LCD display, There is nothing that you can do to make them go away. It is caused by a defective transistor in the LCD display logic that is either stuck on or off. The transistor controls a single horizontal line across the screen. The only way to fix this problem is to replace the display.
The update from Garmin seems to have cured the problem!! All I did was the reload.
I've had my Garmin GPS V for almost four years and loved it ... until the dreaded "black line" showed up. I considered replacing the unit but couldn't find anything that would give me the features the GPS V gave me (elevation, ground speed, grade change) and I didn't need a color screen display as an alternative. I'd even bid on a few replacement units on ebay. I was just about ready to bite the bullet, send it in to Garmin and swallow the $125 rebuilt charge when I ran across this thread. After the update it hasn't locked up and as a bonus I have more detail than I had before!
Have you tried resetting the unit? It sounds like you may have a problem that Garmin needs to address. I would try to reset it first, then make sure you have the latest firmware loaded on the unit. If you still have the problem, it may have to be sent to Garmin for repair.
