Long ago post but have you set up both your laptop and your desktop for file sharing?
One of the easiest ways to do that (XP) is to go into your My Network Places Icon, in your START MENU.
Look for it on the right hand colum (above Control Panel and Below My Computer). If it's not there then Right click on the START button, select Properties, the Start Menu tab will be highlighted select CUSTOMIZE, in the Next Window select the ADVANCED tab at top then in the pane that says START MENU ITEMS scroll down until you see MY NETWORK PLACES and put a check mark there....then click APPLY, OK.

Now go back to your START Menu and select my network places. In the window that opens select the Red roof house icon that says SET UP A HOME or SMALL OFFICE NETWORK. And follow the wizard. Select a COMMON workgroup name for both such as HOME; You don't need to make the suggested diskette at the end of the process as long as both systems are running XP or greater.
Then restart (do this process for BOTH computers).

After restart go to START menu, select MY NETWORK PLACES, and this time VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS. Each of the computers should be there if they are turned on.
Most common file set up for sharing is the SHARED Folder located in the C: (main system drive).

You can open your C: drive and if that file is already being shared it will have a hand underneath it if not simply right click it and select the SHARING tab at the top then click SHARE THIS FOLDER check box....decide if you want to be able to modify it or change it from the other computer. If you do then click the second check box below that to ALLOW NETWORK USERS TO CHANGE MY FILES.
