My Western Digital keeps asking to be formatted. I am unable to open the drive or reformat. What can I do?? I have a lot of files on this drive.

Hi, If you format the drive you will erase everything on it including your files. I would run your ant-virus you may have a virus on it. Second save all your files on a back-up disc. Then format the drive if you can. good luck.

My Book (WD Western Digital) says "The disk in drive _ is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" My Book has important data but I can't access stored files on my new computer.

Hi,

The problem you are having is not uncommon and is fairly easy to resolve with the help of a pro. The Partition Table or File allocation table is modt likely damaged and that is why you are having difficulty accessing it.

You can try running chkdsk ?: /f from the run box(?=drive letter), this will pop up a warning that the disk will be checked on the next restart.

This does run a slight risk of damaging files but quite often recovers the drive successfully.

Your other option is to send it to a data recovery firm and have them extract the data without risk of damaging the files, then they can test the drive for any potential failures, format it and reload it with your data.

If you are in North America try Armor-IT Data Recovery, if you're in another region let me know which one and I'll make a recommendation for you.

Wd my book broken!!!

Hi naths99,

Not to worry, you haven't lost the drive, what you have done thou is you formatted over all the software that allowed the drive to mirror your data. But as I said all is not lost. Here's a link that will reinstall all the software that was originally there. HERE! Pick your My Book and away you go!

Good Luck

My Book Premium ES Edition 500GB Dual Lights

Hi huix0018,

First thing you need to do is to determin if the drive is working or not.
Either the drive itself failed or it could be you did not stop your external hard drive safely in your PC or Macintosh before unplugging either the power or data cable.
1: Determine if the drive itself has failed
For purposes of testing, connect the power adapter directly to the wall. If you do not hear or feel the drive spin up when you connect the power, the drive will need to be replaced. If the drive spins up, but nothing shows up in My Computer or in Disk Management, change the USB cable and connect the new one to another port on your Computer. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Management, try the drive on another PC to see if it shows up on that computer. If that computer still does not detect the drive by showing you the system tray icon or by listing the drive in the Device Manager after you plug in the drive, the drive is bad and needs to be replaced.
If you require data recovery services on your failed drive, here's a list of authorized preferred data recovery partners
If you find that you do need to replace your drive, here's a link to WD to replace it.How can I replace a product under warranty?
2: Determine if the drive can be used again
If the computer does detect the drive, you can test the drive by using WD's Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. For more information on how to use the software to test the drive, Click here: How to test a drive for problems using Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics
Now If the software reports an error for the drive, you will need to look up what it means here: Data Lifeguard Tools 11 Error Codes .
If the software shows no errors for the drive, and you do not wish to send the drive for data recovery, you can partition and format the drive so you can use it again. For step by step information on how to format the drive click below:
How to partition and format your hard drive (from unused space) for use in Windows XP or Server 2003
IMPORTANT: To avoid corrupting or losing the data on your external hard drive you should always shut down the drive correctly before you disconnect the data cable from the drive or computer, or the power connection from the drive or the wall outlet.

And Finally, Here is a link to get you the drives and utilities software for the Premium ES Edition. HERE!

I hope this helps and Good Luck!

My book premium edition ii and windows vista

I am running 4 WD SATA drive internally on Vista Ultimate, and no problem. I have a simpletech USB 360gb external drive that I had not used after the VISTA install. After reading your problem, I hooked it up and turned it on, and it worked just fine. However, the computer forums are FULL of folks complaining about the My Book drives. WD site shows extra drivers for Win98 (as expected) and nothing for VISTA (would not think you would need one)

I would disconnect the MY BOOK. Get the PC running on its internal drives. Remove any MY BOOK drivers (they are likely for Win98). Reboot the PC. Connect the MY BOOK drive to a usb port and turn it on. If it doesn't come up as an external drive, I would think there was something wrong with it and contact Western Digital. You SHOULD NOT require VISTA drivers for any USB device. My warranty experience with WD has always been outstanding. Hope this helps
