Phoenix bios update for my vista desktop

Computers normally recognise a change of additional memory. What RAM did you have in before? It also could be that 1 or both of your RAM chips are not properly seated on all pins. Try taking them out and replacing, maybe in the opposite order.
If that fails go back to the RAM you had in before you started and let me know if it still works

My acer aspire X3950 takes a while to shut down

Sounds like it's probably due to a lot of processes running or not much memory in the computer. You can go through your startup entries and look for things that don't need to run or you can add more RAM. Crucial.com will tell you which kind of RAM your computer needs.
To view startup processes Vista/7 click the start menu and type in msconfig, hit enter, click the Startup tab. Windows Defender, which is built in, will also help you with that.

I have an Acer am5100-u5301a. Is there a bios upgrade?

If the specs read that you can operate with 4GB of RAM, then I believe the AMD690g chipset is not the culprit.

The RAM that you're adding may be defective, or incompatible with the existing RAM.

Another possibility could be a bad RAM socket.

I also doubt you would get a black screen due to adding more RAM than the system is capable of handling, it would still start, but would not utilize the additional RAM.

Black screen usually means bad RAM or incompatible RAM or bad socket

Acer M3100 crashed

I'd suggest there is a possible hardware error. You need to get into the bios and check the temperatures they'll be under 'system health' or similar. Also might be worth running a ram check. Download 'windiag' it's a microsoft program designed to check your ram and it is very good.

My laptop is very slow...

1st off - do a restore on the computer to bring it back to factory settings. This will clean it up and speed it up as well. 2nd you need more ram . Ram is very cheap and Vista needs lots of ram to run.
Thishis should solve your problem. Total cost to you is about $50.00

Looking to determine RAM in my Acer Aspire M1100 model. Can't find it anywhere so that I can add more RAM. appreciate it Mike

open the run box, you find it under start menu.
In the run box type dxdiag, and press ok. This will return all information on your computer.

Alternatively

Open control panel
Click on system.
You will find ram amount on system properties.

I have a new Acer Aspire 5315. It runs Vista Home Premium. I've increased the ram to 2gig. However, I can't get it to run Vista Aero... any ideas?

It maybe to do with your settings of your graphics card, or whether you have got enough video memory. Also try and go to control panel, performance and enable it! , Read this : http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/966/vista_enable_or_disable_aero_glass_transparency_effect

Install memory upgrade

you need to find out what type of ram,and amount your motherboard takes (sd,ddr,ddr2,sod) and how many ram slots it has, the user manual of the mobo will tell you this information.if you dont have the manual search the net for it.
it is very easy physically on a desktop, you just push them in the slot ,taking note of the notches on the ram sticks, ensuring they lock down correctly,
note if you are using ddr2 you need to install in pairs to obtain the full speed of the ram, things can be a little more tricky on laptops as some are easy to get at, and others you need to remove the cover of the entire laptop.

good luck
Terry
