Presario A900 not showing cd drive in my computer and does not work when a cd is put in

    Its actually a A905TU. would it still be the same answer to fixing.

There are 4 different models of the A900 ( ED, EO, ES, and ET ). Select your model from this page
and select Software and Driver downloads from the following page. Your updates for the model you selected in the first will come up. I suggest install each and every one of those updates.
The reason I say this is because the Sony Vaio has a problem in Vista that disables the CD/DVD until a certain update is installed from their Support site. I'm not saying that is the same situation in your case, but the possibility does exist. Many of the updates will ask you to reboot the computer and for the sake of clarity you probably should reboot when it asks you to, so you need to write down or remember the support website for your model. Bookmarking the page will do the trick and I suggest you do that.
I believe that once you have completed these updates, you will be relieved to a CD/DVD on your computer again, I hope. I know this has worked several times on my Sony Vaio.

    Just select your model from the page that I gave you, make sure you are using the correct downloads and updates, else possibly bad things could happen.

    download page for your 905TU

    If you are using Vista, make sure you get the vista download and if you are using XP, then make sure you get the XP downloads.
    Save all downloads to a download folder that you should name " A905TU " ( without quotes of course ) to remind you that these downloads are the updates for your computer software and hardware. I recommend getting all the downloads before installing any of them. Do the Bios update first and the Intel chipset driver update after that, before any of the other updates.
    Remember in the future that model specifics are VERY important for the technician to help you. It would have been very easy for someone to have given entirely wrong information basesd on your initial posting. Glad you were able to come back quickly and correct that information.

The cd/dvd will open and I can put in a disk, but nothing, no "e" or anything shows up when I click on my computer. What is wrong. I can't use this drive. js3957

clik on start then right click on computer then select manage then a window will come up select device manager the select you dvd drive and click on the small plus sign(+) on left of the drive and and a menu will drop down right click on ths item then select uninstall when finishes close window and restart the pc when it restarts it will detect the drive and reinstall it it might work good luck

Only shows compaq on screen

I work with Compaq computers now and usually your problem points to the hard drive. I know Compaq's will stay on that screen if the hard drive has failed. Try another hard drive would be my suggestion.

My CD ROM/DVD on my computer drive wont open? Why not?

Try either right clicking on the CD drive icon in My Computer and see if it opens, of not put a straightened paperclip into the small hole on the CD drive face and push into open it. Does the light flash or does it make any noise. I would make sure that it isn't jammed by trying the first two. If all is good, then go into Device Control Panel->System->Device manager->DVD\CD-Rom Drives and see if your drive is showing. If it is then right click and click Uninstall and then restart your system. It should find new hardware and reinstall the drivers for your driver if it is working properly.

you mean the cd does not auto start? did you try to acess the cd manually through my computer or windows explorer?

Compaq CD Drive

It appears that the CD drive has failed. My DVD drive did that and I ended up replacing it. They have become fairly inexpensive. You can replace your CD drive with a DVD/RW drive for about $30. I like to use to find cheap computer components. Just check back regularly and a DVD/RW drive should show up.
