Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

Western Digital doesn't show up any more.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive I use for well, my entire music library is on there, and for the last week or so every time I plug it into my imac the light of the hard drive comes on, but it never shows up on my computer screen.

I have two of these, and first one and then the other stopped being detected by my computer. They don't show up in Disk Manager either!

The light on the disk case come on but I do not see it in the Finder. In System Profiler it is listed as an Unknown Device. When I fiddle with the power jack it sometimes appears on the desktop. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have been using the western digital external drive for a year. It has all my music and all my backed up work files. One morning my computer stopped recognizing the drive. Not sure what happened. I work at a place with several people that know there stuff when it comes to computers. People around the office including the IT person are stumped. So unless i take it to a digital recovery place and pay $800 - $1200 I'm out a lot of music and some portfolio pieces. The lesson: back your shit up on to DVDs. Don't rely on external drives.

have WD 500GB and it doesn't show on either mac or windows... I suspect it's a disk failure issue but i don't get any errors. lights are all on as per normal and it makes the normal start up sounds if you listen to the drive. but just doesn't show up.

What Operating system are you using? Also these should already be on
your system or in the latest Service Pack. If you are having problem
with a USB storage device make sure you have the latest bio and updates
for your motherboard (and drivers if its a laptop).

Try this first, unplug all your USB devices from your PC.

    Start button>Run> Type devmgmt.msc click enter>(that launches
the device manager)>.Scroll down Universal Serial Bus
controllers>click on the plus sign>uninstall the driver for the external hard drive>right click
to uninstall>a dialog box will ask,are sure you want to remove that
    device>click OK

Then reboot, Windows will re-install them as you boot up since they are plug and play. Then see if all is OK.

I found this answer on yahoo and it did work for me just now. I have the 1 TB version and I have about 400 GB of data on there. It did work. Fingers crossed until I can get a back up external hard drive. (Yeah, how much sense does *that* make??)

    Good luck to you all!!!

    Using winxp x64

This same problem happened to me.
My WD portable hard drive wasn't showing up when I plugged into my Mac. The blue light turned on, I could hear it whirring, but it wasn't appearing.
I called WD, and they told me that this sometime happens when the hard drive isn't receiving enough power. (This happens ESPECIALLY WHEN USING MACs)
They promptly sent me a new connecting cord that plugs into both of my USB ports in my MacBook. Problem solved.

Hello. I've just had this very problem (and panicked)... but the solution for me was simple..no need to try and mount through disk utility etc etc (which I tried first). ALL I DID WAS TO TURN MY MAC OFF, UNPLUG THE EXT HARDDRIVE FROM THE WALL & REMOVE ALL WIRES CONNECTED TO TO UNIT, UNPLUG THE MAC FROM THE MAINS, WAIT A FEW SECONDS, PLUG IT BACK IN, PLUG THE HARDRIVE TO THE MAINS AGAIN, REATTACH THE FIREWIRE AND SWITCH ON THE POWER TO ALL. THE BEAUTIFUL LIGHT REAPPEARED AND WAS MOUNTED TO THE DESKTOP. SORTED. TRY THIS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!

Allright!!
I dont know if this will work for everyone.
Regarding my previous post i had taken the hard disk out of the enclosure and plugged it directly into the motherboard via sata to no avail.
I then decided to put it back in for enclosure and thought i will try it again.
In device manager i realised the hard disk kept trying to refresh inself and would cut off before it got recognised....playing with the enable/disable option i managed to (somehow) get the drive working(cant explain how yet)
But it worked long enough for me to make my backups.
So i would recomment trying to play around with device manager....might get it to work.
Also its intresting to know that if you try to claim on the warrenty using the serial number on the enclousure you get only one year warrenty but if you open it and enter the serial number printed on the hard disk itself you get a longer warrenty.....
Hope this helps
Good Luck

Try another cable.

Try using a powered hub to connect to your computer.

Remove the USB hardware from Device Manager and reboot Windows. When it reboots it will re-discover it.

You can disable the sleep timer in the settings menu. Details can be found on page 34 of the product manual:

Passport drives are generally used for backups so they like to turn themselves off to extend their life cycle. If you want to use an external drive for frequent media use, I recommend WD Elements.

How do I use my WD hard drive to store files so I can free up space on my laptop hard drive?

Hi:
That's an easy task:
1) Plug your Hd to your laptop and wait until the laptop recognize it as a new drive and assign a new letter to it. If you have a disc use it if your laptop ask for it.
2) Copy all files you want to transfer to the new HD and paste them on it.
That's it.

Unit downloaded fine ad the did the back up of the drive fine.started the updates and the firmware stopped and then the drive locked up how to access the drive again after reboot nothing shows G: F:

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External Icon.zip when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA
